Hey guys, looking for a new scope to put on top my savage 111 chambered in 30-06. What are the better options? I was look at a Vortex Viper PST but I heard from an experienced friend that the glass quality just isn't as good as some of ther others in that price range.. I'm gonna be using it for hunting and target shooting, possibly out to 800 yards for now as that's the furthest I have available to me at the moment. I have roughly 1 week to decide so any help is appreciated!

The glass on the 6-24x50 PST is fantastic. I've heard that the 4-16x50 can be hit and miss, and the 2.5-10x44 is the red-headed step child in the family.

I recently had to decide between the PST, Sightron SIII, or a used Mark4. It really just depends on which power range and features you want. The PST comes in FFP, and the SIII doesn't, I don't believe the Mk4 does, either. A zero stop and illum. reticle are other nice features of the PST. Some people like the glass in the PST better than the SIII, but most reviews show the SIII having just a slight edge in optical quality over the other two scopes. Tracking in all 3 is superb. Hard to go wrong between the 3, but you have to pick the scope that has the most features that you're looking for.

The SIII is a great target scope, and the PST is a better choice for tactical-style shooting. The Mk4 is also great, but I wanted FFP in this particular scope purchase.

For hunting and target shooting, I went PST. No regrets.

Most people say the sightron and zeiss has the clearer glass but is it enough to beat out the extra options of the PST? Illumination, zero stop? I'll probably be getting the SFP as that's all I can find at the moment if I end up deciding on it. I had my mind set but talking I my friend really made me wonder..he said Leopuld was a better buy as well. Decisions decisions, just when you think you got it all figured out!

I have several Zeiss Conquests, and for the price, I find them hard to beat. I also have a Sightron Big Sky, which is good for the money, but I prefer the Conquests.

Yah i'm going to buy a scope next monday and I'm gonna take a look through a few of the scopes. I'm still really leaning towards the pst. I want the extra zoom for when I do get into those farther ranges. If some do have a problem being cloudy I will ask if I can just take a look through a few of them. I hear a lot more good than bad about these scopes, especially in the 6-24. Would you recommend the FFP or SFP? I don't think it's really a big deal to me one way or the other, just that lots of people also say once they use an FFP they won't go back.

All scopes look great in the store.

You don't "need" more than 12x to shoot 800 yds, unless you are shooting at sub MOA targets.

I just picked up a Zeiss Conquest in 6.5-20x50 and 3.5-10x44. After alot of research and now using them for the past few weeks I think they are the best sub $1000 scope on the market. Zeiss has many many years of making top notch stuff and resale will always be premium. Zeiss warranty is just as good as Leupold or Vortex.
You can get a Conquest in 6.5-20x 50 with an 800 or 1000 yard rapid Z reticle for the 1K$$ mark form the right dealers here on CGN.

Cheers!!

That certainly makes one wonder what's going on with their glass manufacturing and coatings, a little suspect perhaps. :ninja:

Yeah, I'm not sure what's going on there. It's also just something that I've read, so keep that in mind. It's certainly not fact, nor based on a single, unbiased test involving a large sample of scopes ;)
