Yes I am looking at buying a 99E in 308 with a 4-10X44mm simmons 44 mag scope mounted. Good overall condition with some light pitting in bore. Do not like the stock finish as it is smooth and shiney. I think it was refinished as I can see brush stokes in it but not sure maybe savage didn't have real high qc standards in this time frame. Price is 560$ after taxes. I really want a 308 lever but maybe this price is abit high for one without a hammer LOL

For an E with birch stocks 350.00 is plenty for a clean one, considering a decent EG or F is in the 375.00 to 450.00 range. The E is an economy version of the 99. The Simmons as noted adds little but could allow 35.00 for it.

I don't know guys. Are you sure you guys aren't being to critical ? Why do I see all the obscure 300 sav chamberings going for around four hundred bucks ?

Gotta remember the "E" stands for "Economy".

The 99E's weren't piss poor models like the Axis that used crappier parts. They were still good solid parts that Savage used back in the good old days but the E's lacked certain options that the EG's and the R's still had. Like the fact that it never got a tang safety and stayed with a lever safety (actually I'd bet a few guys here would prefer that anyways). also the fact that it never had a shell counter window (does anyone actually look at that thing when they're shooting)? The birch stocks ya, they cheaped out there but it's few and far between that you even find an E with a birch stock, most were the same walnut they used on the other models. I think they only tried out the birch for maybe a couple years at most.

$350-$400 is a good fair price for an E pending condition.

Thanks Maddog. The stock on this one appears to have been re-stained although it is possibly original I can see brush strokes in the finish. If I do buy it I will strip the wood and go with a dark oil finish.

Thanks for the heads up guys gonna wait for something with a hammer.

I wouldn't necessarily do that, just find the 99 that you like. If I was faced with a decision to buy comparable condition 99 or 94 I would have to spend a lot of time agonizing, but I think I'd grab the 99 before I picked up the 94.

I have neither and want both. Classic gunnuttery!:D
