I have a 1:8 twist 6BR that I would like to use to slay gophers this year.
Anyone recommend a a good bullet for this?
I was thinking 65grn V-MAX but that might be to light for that twist???

I use 60 gr Taipans over 34.9 gr of AR2208 in Lapua brass with BR4 primers for just over 3500 fps to head shoot Kangaroo's out to 300 yards, they make an absolute mess of the heads which are about the same size as the head on a medium dog, to the point that when cut off and turned inside out, the bone fragments and everything else simply drips off the skin.
The 60 gr projectiles do not allow one to shoot the head when the head is below the body-line as they are wont to penetrate through to the body, however less than perfect shots leave the animal miserable and unable to vacate premises, which is desirable so as to minimise unnecessary suffering.
Note that AR2208 is sold as Varget in North America, and 60 gr Sierra's can be substituted for Taipans ( Taipans are Aus $220.00 per 1000 ).
It also should be noted that I am Moly coating my projectiles.

Yes you can use a quicker powder...I use AR2208 because it is comfortable to shoot with and is showing very little pressure in my firearm.
You may find that 1-8 twist is too quick for this weight but until you try them you will not know !

Just a further note, I have not found neither 58 gr Hornady's nor 55 gr Noslers to be as accurate as the Taipans or the Sierra's in the last three 6MM barrels, the same goes for the other Pro Trappers in this area using 6 MM/.243....yours may be different though.

J Stuart,
I do use Varget in my 6BR on a regular basis and have an 8lb Keg in the house :D

Thanks for the ideas, I am still going to try a box of 65grn V-Max bullets and pray they don't fly apart but will also pick up some 87's if I can find them.

Thanks, already got it bookmarked at work and at home. I was looking for 1:8 twist loads specifically to get away with lightest bullet for maximum aerial acrobatics.

I would have gone the other way (1:14 to 1:16 ) for light (55 to 60 gr ) projectiles, the faster twist is meant for long heavy-for-calibre projectiles.

That said, there is no reason the 1:8 will not work with them.

The reason it is a 1:8 is because I built it as a Target rifle that I shoot 105-107grn bullets in for ISSF 300m. But I figure nothing is too good for Gopher shooting...hell...i'll even take out my 7mm Rem Mag to do some slaying but that's another thread :D

CyaN1de,

You need to come over for a visit, we take the cannons (7x57 and larger) out to shoot rabbits, but the rules are they have to be shot whilst standing on your own two feet.
My mate has a Parker Hale in 7MM Rem Mag and I have been trying to con him into coming out with us....I don't think he likes the rules !

How about posting a Picture of the rifle, is it a Stolle, how does it shoot, when are you coming over ?

See my thread HERE I just uploaded the pics again as I lost my picture hosting server.
I just took pics of the finished rifle and have posted them.
