I finally recieved my PAL the other day, it only took two years and six months to arrive. At last I can buy a rifle !

My dilema is that I would like to buy an SKS or a CZ 858 but I don't know which one to go for and I can't afford both at the moment.
I had a Vzor 58 many years ago in the UK and although it looked like a piece of crap with it's chip board looking stock and cheap paint job it was a really nice rifle to shoot, much better in fact than any AK I tried.

I have heard on this forum and elsewhere that the Yugo SKS rifles are of superior build quality, and I know that they are available from Marstar, but it seems that they are out of stock of the 59/66 variation at present which is a pitty as I really fancied a new in the grease rifle.

Has anyone here seen one of the "good condition" 59 varients from Marstar, if so what condition was it in ?

I have never shot an SKS in my life. What are the pros and cons between this and the 858 ?

Thanks

Turf,

And merry christmas to you to mate. I have two friends that their PAL has taken over 18 months due to a long series of paperwork problems by the CFC....so lighten up. On Christmas day to boot....

Flobalob, welcome to the board and Merry Christmas. Although I have neither an 858 or SKS, I would recommend as a first rifle, you pick up an SKS and use the remaining funds for ammuntion to shoot and more importantly your membership fees for your range and the CSSA. You can learn alot about the differences by doing searches on the boards to see what others have said. Good luck and welcome. Cheers

I own an sks and have quickly handled an 858. If your just starting shooting I'd say go with the sks. It's cheap and reliable. It wont shoot 1" groups but it will most likely be a while before you will either! Morph is right, get the sks with the money you save can pick you up 1120 rounds of 7.62X39 which is a good start for practice. check out the banner ads at the top of the page from wolverine. I have found comparable prices but it's plus shipping.

My only complaint about the sks is the poor trigger. My norinco was only $200 so to expect a sweet trigger is a little much. I have never shot a yugo so mabe the are machined/stamped a little better?? I'd expect a long creppy trigger pull with inconsistant weight. If you are completely new to guns you might not notice.

Don't get hold of the wrong end of the stick Morpheus, I am a happy boy:)

Anyone know where I can get a first class yugo sks ? Does anyone have one for sale ?

I am not new to guns, I had pleanty in the UK before they made it impossible to carry on.

I doubt I will be paying any range fees as I live in Sask, in the middle of king nowhere. I have been practising with an antique rolling block at ranges of up to 500 yds I have a shooting bench on my deck.

I would get yourself a Norinco M14 - .308 Win ($500.00) brand new along with a couple 20-shot clips (Pinned for 5)

I have one, and all I have to say is HOLY SH*T!!! .........what a rifle, amazingly accurate, fun to shoot, and you can always "trick" it out by getting a painted synthetic stock (Army cammo), scope, and Bi-pod.

You wont be sorry.

I had a good look at one of these at a gun show recently,I have to say I was very disapointed with the finish. I had the real thing many yrs ago and it was a great rifle. How may rounds have you put through yours ?

y2k

Do you think the libs will ban the sks ?

I've put thousands through my M-14 norc and it has been fantastic.

Yugo SKSs are the best. The triggers can be smoothed out considerably.

The Libs will eventually ban everything..

but only if we let them.

I am no fan of the SKS rifle. Go with the 858. You are more familliar with it so it wont be a big change for you.

What is it that you dislike about the sks Scarecrow ? Is the 858 really worth twice the money in your opinion ? Please give me all the details you can.

Thanks

I just bought my 21 year old son a Chinese SKS and a case of 1120 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo from Lever Arms in Vancouver earlier this week. After stripping, cleaning the gun and painting the ugly stock I wrapped it up and gave it to him last night (Christmas Eve) for an early Christmas present.

After our Christmas Eve dinner my wife said take him to the range  so with her blessings we raced off to the club and had about an hour of shooting with his new SKS, my G20 10mm and it's A/A 22lr conversion kit.

We fired 120 rounds through the SKS without it missing a beat. The trigger was pretty sad but the accuracy was better than expected.

I recommend spending the $135.00 for a Chinese SKS, $159.00 for a box of 1120 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo, $7.50 for a can of Speckle Stone textured spray paint in the colour of your choice and another $5.00 for a can of clear matte laquer to finish it off with and get out and enjoy it.

:D Best Christmas Eve my son and I have ever had....:D

To hell with SA, you can buy three M-305s for each M1A.

Where can I get one of those? In 30-06.FN-49s.
theirs nothing wrong an SKS ,its a fun gun to shot and ammo's cheap. So ,lots of practice.Thats a big point for it.And low recoil.
The only bad thing about the chinese ones are the short length of pull, short stocks on them.the yugo ones should be longer.
Wish somebody would made a nice East German laminated type stock.

SKS handles like a hunting rifle. Aftermarket stocks to make it more "assault rifle" ish suck. As much as stripper clips are fine for the next guy, I find magazines to be alot more usefull.

But if your idea of shooting X39 means sitting on your ass, popping off a round every few hours, then the SKS is fine. I just trust Czech made more then yugoslavian.

I know exactly what you mean

That's the understatement of the year. If I get one, and I think I may well do so, it will be keeping the original stock.

I will probably end up with a 858 and and an SKS eventually:)

Since everyone needs at least one utility gun, I bought a very nice but used Chinese SKS from Hitzy, and a case of ammo. One of these days, I'll get around to shooting it. I've owned several SKS in the past. The Yugo is by far the best built. I would not regret spending the $250 for the first model Yugo's from Marstar.

If you are forced to choose between the Yugo SKS and the VZ-58, I'd tend to get the VZ. Frankly, the trigger would be the deciding factor for me.

If budget reigns over all, get the cheap Yugo SKS and spend the rest on ammo.
