Hopefully someone can give me some advice on how to proceed with straightening this out.

The story of how this happened is long, but the short version is that I have a firearm that was given to the police (not confiscated but turned in voluntarily prior to the long-gun registry because it was an old junker) but it was also mistakenly registered AFTER the police took it.

As far as I know, there was never a 'receipt' issued by the police stating that they took the gun.

Is there someone here who is familiar with the registration system and could read the whole story and offer some informed advice about who to contact about this matter?

"...I have a firearm that was given to..." If the cops got it before there was a registry, it was destroyed, long ago. Receipt or not. In any case, call the CFC about the paperwork.

Thanks Sunray.

I know the gun's been destroyed (nobody in their right mind would've wanted the rusty thing.)

You think that I can just call up the CFC to explain things and they won't have a problem with the fact that I registered a gun that I no longer had in my possession?

That would definitely be the easiest way to handle things.

"...You think that I can just call up the CFC..." Yep. Excrement happens and they know it. They're the ones who deal with paper work. There is no other place to call. It's better that you contact them to get it sorted out than having to explain where a firearm is that you have paper for but no gun, if the inspections ever actually start.
Mind you, what they'll do is another question. The cops may have a record of what they did with it. In any case, give 'em a call.

"...I'll do that ASAP..." Hi. Better sooner rather than later. Nobody is coming for you, but deal with it. Nobody is going to be beating down your door in the middle of the night. Nor will you or your's be dragged off.
It's a paperwork thing. Putting it off isn't a good thing.
It's a case of a reasonable guy needing to sort out a reasonable paperwork thing.
