A buddy of mine is looking for a really high magnification scope and at least
50mm and bigger! Doesn't care about lenght or weight or $$. Heck he just wants a really big scope! Which would replace his Zeiss 6.5-20x50mm that he finds too small! I need help because I usually help guys with their "normal" hunting scopes. He will be using this scope for hunting and target shooting.
What would you guys recommend?
Regards, Ghunter

Is this friend of yours compensating for some other shortcoming?

Does he want magnfication or objective lens size? The biggest telescopes are astronomy radio telescopes linked together around the world. And the biggest optical telescope won't fit on any handheld firearm; 6.5-20 x50 is plenty big enough for most people.

The Europeans hunt boar and red deer at night from stands. They have some impressive light gathering rifle scopes. Maybe he needs to find the German sporting goods supplier "Frankonia" website and start looking around there. Guaranteed there are companies we aren't familiar with in North America.

weaver and leupold have some high mag fixed powers, as do many other makers i'm sure.

check out the competition scopes on leupolds website.
this should do the trick:)

Nightforce 12-42x 56mm. If price isn't an issue March makes a 10-60x 52mm.

NF 8-32x, S3 8-32x and Bushnell 6500 4-30x are also considerations.

But.... it also depends on what type of rifle he's shooting, what he's shooting and how far. These scopes are for very specific types of rifles and shooting. It may not suite his goals.

That being said I kind of feel sorry for that small second hand Conquest. I'll save it from the junk heap for $200 :p

+2 on the Night Force 12-42 X 56 NXS. awesome scope! You can see hits on steel at 1000 yards! Maybe even farther, but I've only shot steel to 1000.

Great scope for sure but not certain I'd want a scope with a minimum magnification of 12 for hunting.

I agree with sheephunter .I am the original Mr Magoo (blinded by my nearsightedness ) and I love/need great optics but...

Anyhow, whatever floats your buddys boat, but maybe he might be better served by having two scopes ,one for hunting and one for paper punching?

Cheers
Timo

anyone have pics of those military zeiss sniper scopes with something like a 60 or 70mm bell?

because that would look friggin huge on a slim mountain rifle:D

I forgot about the hunting part. I only use my Zeiss Conquest 6-20x scopes for varmint and target rifles. I'm not sure why anyone would want more for hunting. Unless they were hunting with a 338 Lapua or 50 BMG from a mile away?

Thanks guys for the input on this subject. Very helpful info.
He was actually looking at the ATN tactical scope suited for the 50 BMG!
With the 80mm objective lense! Does anybody have experience with this brand?
By the way, I'm still trying to convinced him that his Zeiss will do the job just fine!
Regards,

I would recommend the Zeiss 6-24x72 with illuminated reticle. It will set you back 3 grand, but it's big alright (and pretty useless, in my opinion).
I have a 6.5-20x50 Zeiss doing a terrific job at pretty much everything. The same is true for my 4.5-14x50.
