Need Advice For IPSC Production Gun

Hi Everyone,

I just completed the black badge course and now am looking for a nice gun for IPSC production class. I'd like to know what people would recommend and why?

These are the ones being suggested so far:

CZ SP101 Shadow (most popular)
Glock (not sure what model would be best)
Sig 226 (least popupar)
STI GP6

I am trying to keep the entry cost as reasonable as possible so any insights into accessories etc would contribute to my decision.

The shadow is the most popular for a reason, even if it is not the one I use. I use my 226, only a few have that caliber.
There seem to be a fair amount of S&W M&P around
What gun did you use on you BB course?

I have an option to get one of the factory reconditioned police trade in Sig 226's for 850.00 which is why I asked about that one. How do you like it?

I actually used a revolver for the BB course but I would not be interested in competing in the revolver class. I would prefer to be in production as it seems to keep the costs down and is more popular.

I love my 226, but I am planning to keep it as my back-up gun and buy probably a 226 tac ops for production due to the front sight and Srt
 
If you like feeling of a brick in your hand, then by all means get Sig. :)

When getting a gun for Production you need to consider not only gun cost and its ergonomics but also availability and cost of OFM (factory) spare parts, including springs, magazines, different grips, etc. Don't think Sig is up to the level on that.

Don't forget about the Tanfoglio Stock III...

Longer sight radius than any of your choices, adjustable sights, flared magwell, Overtravel trigger adjustment, extended mag release, highest grip axis of all the guns you list too.

If at all possible, try before you buy. There`s a reason why you see a lot of lightly used guns on the EE. Nothing sucks more than discovering the gun that looks good on paper feels like poo in your hands.

I use the GP6. I was able to shoot it back to back with the Shadow, and it just felt better.

The 226 is a nice gun, but I find it a tad top heavy.
I know the M&P and Glock are good guns, but I hate the mushy trigger pull for each shot.
 
Yup, get out to the range and try as many differnt guns as you possibly can....

that being said I have a shadow and will marry it as soon as they allow inanimate object - human weddings....

whatever feels best and fits your budget best out of those 3

id go for one of the last 2, but thats mostly because i dont want to give certain people the satisfaction of me buying a shadow
 
I am gonna push my experience.....I would also throw an HK P30-L-S 9mm into the equation...more money but really nice grip. Mag changes are the opposite of what many are used to (Using the thumb is normal for pressing the mag change, but for HK you use your finger)

I prefer the tanfoglio stock2/ stock 3, then CZ Shadow, then HK P30 series, then whatever floats your boat. IN that order. I have owned all of the above.

My preference for the stock2 and 3 would be Henning front sight and singled side big thumb safety.
 
In production I have shot an M&P, XD and Shadow. Hands down the Shadow is the best of the three. It's the only one I shoot every time I go to the range.
 
Best shooter in the whole world Eric Grauffel is using Stock III for Production. It must be a good gun if Eric goes with that choice. In my opinion better then Shadow.

Now, put the gun aside. If you want to be good, gun play less of role then combination of training and amount of ammo you can shoot.

Lots of good strong feedback. Thanks! The CZ has a very loyal following and parts seem to be readily available in Canada and lots of factory options allow for some changes and still stay in production.

How does the Stock III compare in trigger pull, parts availability etc?

I agreee that practice and training are a big part but having raced cars, I know that there is always a couple of models that are hard to overcome!
 
The best advice is shoot what feels best in your hand. The next next best piece of advice about IPSC in general is just SHOOT and stay out of the politics of IPSC as long as you can

yep...and the OEM options list that EriC Grauffel posted helps clarify factory parts for production division in IPSC.
