Hey guys , I've always hunted varmint but it was always around 100 yards or so with a Stevens 200 in 22-250. I'm looking to extend that range to about 400-500 yards with a new smoother more accurate rifle , the ruger hawkeye in .223. Not sure if the 22-250 is worth it. I'm just wondering if I should bother getting the predator model with a heavier barrel or just the standard barrel. I'll also be using this rifle at the range to punch paper and trying to get lots of practice. Any other mod is appreciated. Going wolf hunting , the further I am from them ... The better

Put a new barrel on that Stevens, new trigger. Maybe a different stock... not necessary with some TLC

Load up some 75 to 80gr VLD's out of a 22-250. Scope that lets you dial and see with confidence.

Learn to dope the wind. Good range finder... Practise, practise, practise.... Done

See articles on my website in the TECH section.

For barrel contour and rifle weight, you decide if you are going to hike alot, sit in 1 place... how portable you need to be.

Cold bore and likely a follow up is all you are going to get on a wolf so heavy barrels have limited benefit.

Gun balance and being able to get the crosshairs on target... far more important.

Jerry is right. And besides a little more oomph at that distance will be noticBle. Stick to 22-250 at least. Especially if hunting wolf. Little extra I'd good. Try and get a little closer. You will notice the difference that 200+ Fps will make, bui don't suggest the 500 yard shot with a 224 cal on anything as big or bigger then a yote. I know its capable, but are you
