Looking for some advice.
Im looking to buy a rimfire in 17 HMR.
Wanted to hear some opinions.
Here is my criteria.
The rifle would be used mostly for hunting, not a bench rest rifle.
No need for any fancy stock and such.
It would need to be light weight.
Short length, overall length under 35” if possible.
Prefer to have iron sights.
Reasonably accurate for hunting (being able to get a good head or chest shot as a squirrel within40 to 50 yards)

Budget is around $350 not including scope.
So far I noticed the savage 17 series but the thing that puts me off for them at the moment is the overall length which is just less than 40”.

Anyone have any ideas?

I would even consider a cricket rifle if only they made them in 17hmr.

Don't get me wrong I'm a big fan of the 17hmr. But with your criteria, iron sights, 40-50yd shots on squirrels, you shuld just get a .22. In my opinion the 17 comes into it's own at 100 to 150 yds on game. Save some cash on ammo.

x3 on the .22! Maybe a Henry lever action? Cabelas Canada has pretty good prices on them.

<EDIT> Just noticed in your sig that you already have "several .22's". I have a Savage 93R17 GLV, and within 40 yards, there isn't much left of a squirrel after the hollowpoint CCI TNT has gone through it. :)
