After many years with a Remington Nylon 66, I am thinking about replacing it. I'm looking for a fairly light-weight, reasonably accurate semi-auto capable of taking a scope without taking it to a gunsmith. Having been happy with Old Faithful for a long time, I've not been following developments in .22LR and would appreciate comments and suggestions. Thanks.

I'm not up for Anschutz or other Cadillac level .22s, but I'd rather spend what's necessary to get quality if you follow my drift.

Hi ATOM
I'm still a newbie so this in just MHO.

I own a Marlin 795. It's a nice light, solid, accurate rifle and retails for about $200 give or take. You can mount a scope, but you need 3/8" dove tail mounts. I paid $60 for the mounts for my rifle (you can find them cheaper on line I just couldn't/didn't want to wait). The main selling points for me was the last shot hold open action and the clips are interchangeable between the bolt action .22lr's. 10 round clips run about $15 a piece. Currently there are no high capacity mags for the 795, however a 25 rounder is coming. Marlin also makes the model 60, 17 round tube semi with all of the same features as the 795.

I have a buddy who swears by his Ruger 10/22. Again it's a nice light accurate rifle which comes in a wide variety of configurations. The retail I've seen is $250+ depending on the configuration. I've used his rifle a couple of time and handled a couple in stores. The main problem I have is the is no hold open and the action release is my experience is difficult to engage. The real plus to the Ruger is the many options, upgrades and add ons available. Including a action that does have last round hold open and high capacity mags. There are tons of Ruger Owners on here, so the product must be good.

I have another buddy who has a Remington 597. I've never used it. He loves it and prefers it to my other buddy's Ruger which he has also used. The 597 also features a standard last round hold open action. A 25 round mag is readily available for it, however because the lip is plastic the hold open does not work. I'm not sure what the cost is, but you sould be able to find sponsors here who sell them.

As I said, I'm still new but these are the semi's that I'm familiar with. Hope it helps.

Easy. Marlin 60 with tube magazine...your choice of blued, stainless, wood/synthetic/kevlar look stocks. The Marlin 60 is a worthy successor to your Nylon 66.

Or you can go with the Marlin 795 if you like magazine fed.

Thanks, folks. Much to think about. I appreciate your time.

Anybody had any magazine feed problems with either the 10/22 or the 795?

My 795 does not like Winchester very much. 200 rounds (6 FTL, 2 FTF, 10+ FTE). Std Eagle it eats all day. 1000+/- rounds (0 FTL, 0 FTF, 3 FTE - all from 1 box last Sunday) All rounds fired from the stock 10 round mag.

Don't get rid of the Nylon 66. They are definately collectors pieces now. Twenty years ago they were way plentiful, at least here in the states. Now to find one less than $300-$350 is rare. People yearning for their first .22 back I guess. It's the first I had now way more than I would pay for one.

Semi retire the 66 and get a Marlin 60.

In regards to feeding problems, i`ve had none with my 10-22. Some of the guys on the forum seem to have problems with certain mags, i quite using the large mags simply because i have 6 or7 10 shot mags that i use and the 25 and larger get in the way for my style of 22 shooting.

I bought a 795 about 2 months ago, shooted more then 1000 rounds and not a single jam and I usually buy the cheapest stuff.

I love .22's and, ESP. Semi .22's...

Not going to get much better than what you have. I adore my 64's. I've owned a few and, the newest one in the fleet is a stainless Savage. I would gladly trade one for a '66 in a heartbeat!

I love my Rem 597...I thought I would enjoy Hi-cap mags but, honestly, it just condones "spray and, play" shooting and, makes it "clunky". It is accurate and, no eating disorders (haven't tried every ammo but, less fussy than a 64)...I'd gladly trade it for a '66.

Honestly, I owned a Marlin 70 HSC and, sold it...I've regretted it ever since! I love the Marlin semi's and, they may be my favourite but, if I had two, would trade one for a '66.

I am no 10/22 fan and, would trade one just to pet a 66!

Gotta love the opinion posts!
