Need Advice On Bipods Vs Shooting Rest

I have Harris bipods on most my rifles, and a Versa pod coming on a new one, Versa's seem to be a step up over the harris. Both swivel and I have had excellent accuracy with them on the range and field. A sand bag, or table top rest are just tools, accuracy comes down to the man behind the rifle. I personaly prefer a bipod, I shoot with others that prefer a "Girly rest", you know the one's you dial up, If you arent holding it your arent shooting it, but to each thier own.:p If you are going to use a bipod, dont go cheap.

Just an opinion
If you really want to teest yourself get rid of those

"girly scope sights", and then you and richard 338 can really wizz off about gear!
This stuff sounds like the guy who thinks anything but loose powder and round a ball is no good, or casting to a trout with anything but a dry fly is blasphmey!

I shoot what I want becuase it is what I like, not because i think it id better or macho.
Sometimes I have to shoot certain stuff, but not to win, just because it is what I have to shoot.
Richard 338, you should maybe look at who actually designed the Farquarson class and why, and quit your sniping!
Most people could give a rat's ass about what or how you shoot 'till you tell them that what THEY shoot is no good, sissy, or whatever.......

No offence Terry It is just my sick sence of humour if you knew me you would understand I love to push buttons.. All shooting sports are great and we each have our own shooting styles that work for us, to say one is better than the other is arrogant and I only do it in humor. But some day you bench rest guys will learn to shoot!!!:p :p :D

Cat I think you missed this post by me since you quoted me. I do like to stir the #### to get discussion going and use my demented sence of humor or lack of. I appologize for any misunderstanding or offence I may have given. Cat, you shoot with me, you should be onto this by now.

I appreciate all shooting diciplines even if I am not involved in them. And as far as using scopes....I use Iron's on my AR-15 and can accurately employ it out to 300 meters, and 550 with a spotter. you may see me looking for Falling block before long with Irons after you turned me on to them.

No sweat LRC, it's just that I get a bit ticked when a legitimate question is asked and the thread deteriorates into a " I think anyone who doesn't shoot what I do is a sissy", and there is a certain poster here that seems to telish that.
As you know, I am not opposed to any type of target rifle, or any foirm of target shooting, and you are welcome to shoot any of my long range stuff any time you wish.

BTW, i need to ge your shift schedule off you in the near future so we can give you guys a bit of priority for next Spring's rifle rodeo, our service rifle shoot, and of course the precision shoot in the fall.
Sorry if I offended anyone with the thread hijack!

Cat tell us how you really feel! Just kidding of course. Out shooting in this mild weather?

"look at who invented it and why" EXACTLY!!
It was for older disabled shooters to participate and have a good time. I don't think he imagined young healthy benchrest shooters who want to feel like marksmen exploiting every line in the rule book.

Harris sold thousands of their bi-pods to the US Army and Marines :D I guess they can't be too bad as they're being used in the sand box. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:SPR-A_Profile.jpg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M40_%28rifle%29

Right you are...They are both used and both great products, preference will come down to personal choice and aplication in which it is used. I just recieved my Versa pod and I realy like it, I have Harris and they have never let me down. So there ya go.

Richard338, are you suggesting that young healthy BR shooters are taking advantage of every rule in F-class to gain an advantage? Are you suggesting that F-class should only be shot by TR shooters that have eye and muscular problems? Are you suggesting F-class shooters should not use equipment allowed by the rules?

If you're whining about using a bipod in a discipline that allows mechanical front rests...you're just plain whining. SUCK IT UP!

Since you're a bipod shooter, shouldn't you be shooting at the sniper/precision competition in the NSCC? You don't live too far away, right? I will be one of the first to congratulate you if you win. But if I win, will you consider it a "real" win?

later,

Richard338,
I don't mean to jump in at the last minute on what seems to be a very good debate, however, I must ask.
Are you shooting either a .308 or .223 with max bullet weight of 155gr or 80gr? Just like the F class started out?
If the rules allow it, YOU like everyone else has the option to use it or not.

I am a TR shooter, at one time I used a diopter rear sight (which is like a 1.5X mini scope) to help me see the front sight better. Now I use a 1.5X Eagle Eye in the front instead, which helps me see the front sight and the target. If it is allowed by the rules and helps, I use it. Why shoot 46s'-48's without it when I can shoot 50's with it?
I am young enough to just be breaking in my first pair of Bi-focals, however still get my ass handed to me on the range by shooters in their 70's that are still shooting target rifle.

I'm sure it all sounds like whining. I know that whatever is allowed by the rules can be used by anyone including me. It just isn't my style. Under the allowed rules whoever wins wins, I realize that. I just hope to one day win using my own chosen equipment. I don't plan to use .223 or .308, and I don't claim that you should have to use black powder or primitive equipment, I just like to leave some skill in it (other than calling the wind), so I like to use a bipod. You could say that if I shot TR there would be more skill in it and that's true.

When I explain the type of shooting we do to co-workers etc, they are impressed if I say that we can hold a rifle steady and carefully squeeze off a shot that is accurate at 1000 yards. If I was to say that we place the rifle on a set of supports and don't hold it, but just set it up straight and touch it off, they wouldn't be impressed. I can't see why anyone should be impressed, that's just me. If you like to do it, enjoy!

I shot some sniper type matches in Manitoba a couple of years ago. I enjoy that type of match and hope to try it again sometime. I like the time element and like the fact that it removes all need for rests etc. I hope that answers everyones questions. We should be writing letters about the Liberals.
