Need advice on good hunting rifle.

the BAR Safaris are still all steel receivers, no?
last i looked they were even $100 less expensive than the 'aircraft aluminum'/plastic ShortTrac/LongTrac versions.

i had no problems at all with my aluminum Mossberg 500 receiver (in fact i appreciated the fact that it didnt rust and was lighter), but that was a $250 beater shotgun. i dont know if id want one in a $1000 centerfire rifle.
 
The best one is a Browning or similar from the Exchange. What you save over a new one, you can INVEST in practice ammo!

A rifle that lets you shoot fast follow-ups isn't the cure for a wasted first shot, but I do understand that in a lot of areas bush density plays hell with accuracy. When you do get a clear line at your sausage, you want to be confiddent about exactly where YOU, not the rifle, is going to put that bullet.

That Benelli contraption is probably one of the most sinful-looking contraptions I have ever seen. Right up there with that mossberg junker bolt rifle.

At least the BAR doesn't look like a new-age engineering student designed it.
 
You'r 7mm 3006 or 270win they are all good ones, But if you'r going semi you should go short action. Like 308 or 270 wsm. Short action work beter in sime. beside the brow bar don't work very good, I had 5 brow bars not one fo thim worked. I beleave the win sxr rifle in 270 wsm will outshoot any bolt action out of the box nay time.
 
Just can't get excited about any semi - don't like them and I've sure never seen one that could shoot 1/2" or anywhere near it @ 100 yds with ANY ammo. That being said, the Winchester 100 still perks me up when I see a nice one - classic lines, beautifully thought out design. Why the hell they ever stopped production of something like that is beyond me. The R-1 ugly? Eye of the beholder I guess - rather nifty looking IMO, but........it's still a semi.:puke:
 
My SL-7 will hold that accuracy..on a BAD day. If you want to talk accuracy though, let's talk 5 shot groups at least at 300m....At 100 all you need is pie plate accuracy in a hunting rifle, and as MOST big game is shot at 100 yd or less...

I didn't say a semi CAN'T achieve that level of accuracy. But even for an SL7 that's asking a bit much on a GOOD day. HK builds some fine stuff alright, but a 1/2" @ 100 with a what, 16 1/2" barrel? A new one tested with the finest Swarovski scope available managed over 1 1/2" @ 100 with match grade ammo, the best money could buy. As far as a 5-shot group with a big game rifle goes, I can honestly say that I've never needed 5 and if I did, any gun I shoot can't hold 5. And "pie-plate acccuracy" doesn't cut it with anyone I've ever met who hunted except for wing shooters with a scattergun and it shouldn't. And I still don't like most semis......'cept that Win M100....sorry
BTW, the bull moose I shot (with a .45-70) this past fall was at about 180 yards and to this day and of some 15 or so moose was the closest one I've ever shot. Won't say the farthest - apparently I should've used a different weapon! (kidding...)

Your having a bad day with your SL7? I'll buy it off you if you want... I agree they are NICE fire sticks for sure.
 
The 750 is offered in 35 Whelen in both 22" and 18.5" barrels. As long as you don't routinely go past 300 yards I'd say that would be alright way to go. Not too much factory ammo, but Remington offers both 200 and 250 grain Core-Lokt and Federal has 225 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw (which I have yet to see in a store)
I wish I could tell you my own story of dropping something with my Whelen (although it's a 700 BDL), the only time I had it out I was absolutely undressed by a really nice buck. I'm looking to change that in a few weeks when I go moose hunting.
