Need advice on taming my AR

I've recently shot a friend's AR and was astonished at how smooth it was and what little recoil and muzzle rise it had. He was running a 12.5" carbine length with a surefire comp on it. I'm not sure what buffer it had.

I shoot a stock PSA 16" carbine length with a bird cage and an H2 buffer, I bought it used so i will assume that it's the stock buffer. The rifle has a quite a bit of kick and A LOT of muzzle rise compared to my buddy's AR. I need our advice on how to tame the gun while staying on a budget.

Here are the options I have, they can also be combined obviously. What do you guys think would bring the best results and if you're had experience with a similar setup, what worked for you? The only requirement is that the rifle should still be able to cycle on cheap underpowered ammo.

1) Heavier buffer
2) VLTOR A5 buffer tube/spring/buffer (I'm really curious about this one, a lot of people online are raving about this product, but i'm wondering what is the added benefit over a regular H2 buffer)
3) A good muzzle brake (Precision Armament M4-72, Surefire ProComp, Miculek comp)
4) Different barrel, either a 12.5" carbine or a 14.5"-16" midlength. This option is obviously the most expensive and most complicated to install. While I would like a shorter, lighter setup, there are not that many options in terms of barrels in Canada from what I can see, and what is available is above $400. This is my last last resort.

So what do you guys think? Is there anything else I'm missing? What offers the best improvement? Share your experiences.

I have a sticky on muzzle devices, check it out.

I tried a lantac, way too loud and obnoxious, it's in the spare parts bin now.

Do your research on muzzle devices, everyone has different tastes. I recently bought a bunch of pws fsc 556 and I'll be putting them on all my 556 guns. There is a lot more to analyse than just recoil reduction namely noise, barrel movement mitigation, weight and size.

Buffers and springs wont make much of a difference at all.

aac brakeout, silicone flatwire buffer spring, and you get an adjustable gas block.

I based my choice of brake on your sticky actually. You reviewed the Precision Armament M4-72, and while it had the shortest recoil of all of the ones you tested you are sticking with PWS FSC, why is that ?

Couldn't find the m4-72 anywhere! I needed 4 brakes. tavor, acr, colt 6920, colt canada sa 15.7

pws is about a hair lighter

Interesting.. had you been able to obtain one would you have gone with the m4-72?

What about the Miculek comp, I've read a lot of reviews online and people seem extremely satisfied with the performance.

Yes if I could have found 4 m4-72 I would have gone with it.
The miculek comp is actually awesome and price is very good, but he's having issues shipping to Canada lately which wasn't the case a year ago.

Am I missing something here? High recoil from a 223? Im curious as I am waiting for my first AR and my wife will be shooting it too. That said I have a bolt 223 I have loaded fairly hot and its not what I would think of as more than mild recoil.

Lantac Dragon will help... It's only obnoxious to bystanders (like me, when I RO!). If you get another AR, look for mid length gas system. IME they're a little smoother than carbine length.

I'll +1 on the lantac I have one on my mk18.
I thought it was incredibly obnoxious when I first put it on but after being to the range a few times with it I don't find it quite so bad

Plus being able to ring a 8" gong at 100 off hand keeping a still sight picture is something I could never do before

It's all relative bogie, the recoil of my AR is nothing compared to the kick my 308 has. However, the recoil on the AR can be greatly mitigated by using some of the things I spoke about in my initial post, with varying degrees of success as you can tell from everyone's opinions here.

I'm gonna side with MiketheBike on this one. I do a lot of off hand shooting and the pws fsc 556 really has as perfect a balance of muzzle rise mitigation , flash signature reduction and recoil reduction! I've used a lot of brakes and the fsc in my opinion works best. Check in this vid , you'll see the barrel remains really flat.

Any effective brake will kick up a bunch of dirt in the modified prone position as you already know.
I swear by the Surefire brake.
I would say that the miculek is a close second.
