Need advice please

I shoot at the range somewhat regularly, I only go through approximately 750 rounds per month. I shoot .45 auto and now, .44 mag. I've been contemplating the expense of buying my own reloading equipment. I would like to know if buying reloading equipment is really worth the effort and cost for how much I shoot. Some people I've talked to say that just to pay for the press alone, I would need to shoot 19,000 rounds and they were quoting for a Dillon 500? series I think. Am I correct to assume that reloading does take considerable time?

There is a calculator on the web, where you enter the charge, bullet, powder, case and primer cost and it figures out the cost per shot. I'll try and find the site and post it. If you shoot 750 rounds/month, you will recover your costs before you know it. Dillon is high quality, but expensive.

19,000rds to pay of a Dillon???? Either their reloading is stupidly expensive or they paid way too much for the press.

Reloading gives you the option on the type of bullet and load you fire. Many times, you can improve the accuracy by tweaking the load. Once set up, you will save a lot of money unless you get your ammo basically for free.

9mm is close if you put a cost on your time. 45 acp and 44 or less common rds will be about 1/2 as expensive in reload.

I took the next step to cast my own bullets. Now my reloads are cheaper then any surplus centerfire. Way more accurate too.

for HG, I would strongly suggest getting a progressive. The least expensive press that works is the Lee 1000. You can get refurbs directly from Lee for dirt cheap. They come with everything for that calibre and ready to start making ammo. In fact, its so cheap, I bought a press for each cartridge I shoot. The cost of the dies and switch over parts is pretty close to the price of the refurb complete press.

You will pay off that unit in the first few months of use....
