Gonna be setting up a 597 VTR for plinking and hunting small game. Looking for some advice and preferences on whether I should top it with a red dot or a 22 scope ?? Gun has adjustable stock and I will be using it to teach my son how to shoot, due to the red dot unlimited eye relief i'm kinda leaning that way.. Any input is appreciated..

For learning, I'd say red dot, if only because it feels so much closer to using iron sights, which should be the first step in my opinion. Your son can always graduate to a scope later. As for hunting, can't really help you there.

I put a red dot on a 597, and while it is fun to run fast, it's preciseness in aiming leaves room for want- I can see a benefit to a red dot for plinking or squirrel/ bunny hunting, but at the range it gets frustrating trying for groups/ precision. Not that a 597 is overly precise in the grand scheme of things, but it can throw down a decent group from time to time. I used it grouse hunting a few times and while it worked fine, it didn't do much for my confidence come time to drop the hammer.
