hey
well finally got out shooting today with newly purchased sks in my tapco stock with new scope.
function was amazing the rifle felt better then my first sks, why not sure
anyways I was at 25yards and somewhat sighted it in, then everyone moved back to 100yards....I put on the tapco forgrip with bipot insert that came with the stock when I bought it and found everytime I squeezed the trigger the rifle with bounce and I barely got any shots on target.
just getting into distance shooting so I'm no pro...
is this normal and the bounce is caused by bipod? shoot I look at using something else to rest rifle on?
I'm gonna youtube see what I can come up with but if you have any tips please.
thanks
Glenn

i would try a real bi-pod not the forgrip with the bottom out legs. You can get a cheapy one from amazon that screws onto the front bayo lug, i have it on mine and has a few hundred rounds and no issues....or get a weaver rail one for the bottom of the tapco stock, good to go bro :)

ok thanks guys
so the bipod is the reason for most of the hopping or bouncing...its so weird ive shot many times but with this set up I can barely hit the paper...and yes some of it is my fault..lol
I'll look into your two inputs thanks again
Glenn.

If you're not used to firing at a distance, take some time to read up on the fundamentals of shooting... Stuff like focusing on the front sight post, squeezing the trigger, and proper body alignment... If your front sight post is on the target, you should be hitting it no matter what rest you're on. I say this because I recorded myself shooting, and sent the video to my old man (ex ERT / SERT sniper), and he pointed out a lot of stuff I was doing wrong... Mainly my follow thru and breathing, yes he could tell my breathing was off.

Just shoot it as it is meant to be shot. It'll never go down the same hole (absent the invisible hand of randomness). Get a milsurp sniper rifle and tool around with that. Nyet on accuracy - look at the front sight post does it have a 1 on it? That means its been tested and found to shoot straight(ish).

thanks for the help
I'd love to pick up another rifle but not yet...will be waiting for deals later on
I looked on the front sight and something is on it but can't make it out...my eyes can't pick it up will look tomorrow in day time
I know sks's are not the best for distance but don't want to spend more on more guns...well right now that is ..lol

Urban myth that continues to perpetuate itself. Most likely by people trying to sell a rifle. What about mine with a "0" on it? It denoted journal size/interference between the inside diameter of the base/outside diameter of barrel, if anything, nothing to do with accuracy.

The bullet leaves the barrel long before a strange recoil impulse will affect the trajectory. Check your your rifle is assembled correctly, make sure the bi-pod isn't applying pressure to the barrel. I've got an SKS that's action will move in the stock 3/8 inch back and forth (shes abused) and it will still shoot 4" at 100 yards with a Muppet pulling the trigger.

edit : forgot you mentioned a scope, check its securely mounted with some thread locker to keep it in place. I wouldn't trust a gas tube to be very accurate, I wouldn't trust the receiver cover very much either.

What is the point of a bipod on a carbine? Especially a Carbine that was not made for accuracy? Just curious.
It likely felt better because the stock fits you better. Makes a huge difference on rifles that have felt recoil.
Most likely bouncing because the bipod is plastic. Hardish thing on say a wooden table will bounce a bit.

I have a junky sks that was put in a tapco stock with the rail in the front for a cheap bipod. im running it with a cheap chinese scope, it also has a vertical foregrip.
on my portable "bench rest" i find i have the best results if i use my free hand to grip the front vertical grip. It moves me off target less with a solid grip.

everything ive read says to stay away from barrel clamped/bayo clamped by pods and to use the stock mounted ones instead. They change the whip of the barrel and will likely move your POI when in use.

this is the kind of group im getting on my junker sks @ 100m:

thanks for the input
heading up to borden in couple of weeks to shoot and will try holding the forgrip/bipod..I'm also probably gonna pick up a been bag stand from cabelas and try out...I'm not expecting much but still fun to shoot

I find the move to an adjustable buttstock and pistol grip adds a level of comfort to the shooter. Gives you more of a personal fit. It sounds like you have a false zero at 25 yards. I would go back to the 25 yard lane and shoot the gun as you are going to fire it at 100 yards with the Tapco bi-pod foregrip. When you shot at 100 yards, where were the bullets landing when you said, barely on target? What scope do you have on the rifle and how is it mounted? SKS has significant muzzle rise but you should be able to hold it firm enough on the bench. With that being said, another user did say that the bullet is long gone before the recoil effects would effect you accuracy unless you are rapid firing and I agree with that. What you are more thinking is a harmonic issue with the barrel. Do you still have the cleaning rod and bayo installed? There are many variables with any type of rifle. Just start at one and work your way through and you'll gain all sorts of insights and practice! Also, since I've joined this forum I found that there are a lot of guys experimenting and challenging firearm paradigms on and on so there is a wealth of knowledge out there!

Good luck on your next outing!

thanks
well if I can remember my grouping wasnt too great at 25yards but I was in a rush as the line was ready to move back to 100 yards so may have not sighted in as well as I should have..
Barska 4x28 IR Multi Rail Electro Sight from cabelas is what I mounted via the wartak rail system ( i think its called )
red laser bore sight to get it atleast some what sighted
the rounds difficult to determine impact somewhat close to targets maybe 10inches left and right again I'm guessing I could see placement of impact from dust via other eye. either way next saturday I'm heading up again and will see what I can do with sand bag and bi pod
looking on youtube getting some ideas.

Well the rail that you have is one of the most solid choices for the SKS and the optics you have are more than a fit for it as well. I would say for sure that you were rushed and didn't have a chance to get zeroed. I always shoot in groups of three to allow the barrel to cool. Take your time with it. Good luck! Let us know how you did!

get rid of the SKS and get a good American rifle
it pisses me off when people are buying these worn out crappy-to-begin-with rifles and expect accuracy.
get a Savage Axis and you'll be under 2" on target at 100

if the savage axis shot 7.62x39 then I would but I'm trying to keep my ammo to a minimum. not having tons of different calibers that is...besides the sks is a fun rifle to shoot and is so much cheaper
I started this thread knowing sks is not a sniper rifle but just want to atleast hit paper..lol
if you look at the two rifles the sks is more of a challenge to shoot cause if you can get groupings like derr12 showing above then its more fun.
