I am thinking on buying an sks d new for $500. It would be my first sks and I was wondering what you guys think of paying that much for one. Is the sks d better than the russian ones? any info would help. Thanks

I've never heard of such a rip off for 500 bones, it would worth max half of that & possibly less.
I prefer the russian one towards the Norinco, just personal preference even though it doesn't take AK mags.

I think $500.00 is too much to pay for an SKS-D too. I have seen them sold for $400.00 though. It all depends on what it is worth to you. I think the chinese SKS-D is the only one of it's kind, no one else (as far as I know) made a detachable mag SKS.

go with the regular sks instead of D, which is more of a niche gun

if you like the regular sks, and wanna play with something new, then get the D

I got the itch to get one. And since the russian ones are delayed, is the chinese one to crappy to think about getting for the interm?

Depends on the type, the older ones were much better made.

It's really just fit and finish issues for the most part. I have a Norc one and have handled my friend's yugo one. The main difference is just the yugo looks nicer everyway possible. As far as shooting goes, I didn't feel any noticable difference.

They are the older models before quality dropped off on the last batch.

For 500 find a VZ58.

Yeah the CZ and VZs are really fun

sorry I'm still confused, I thought you said the non-bayo ones have worse quality? do you mean they are the newer models after the quality dropped off?

I had a new SKS-D for about 2 weeks and sold it and bought the CZ 858, I am much happier with the CZ for what it is worth.

i plan to get a cz later on...just wanted to try out an sks first.

Get a Russian. Much higher quality, more value and you can only have 5 rounds anyway, so being able to use AK mags is not a valuable point. The D's are not milspec, just something cobbled together for the NA market AFAIK.

i'd go for the cz any day over a $500 sks-d (and i have owned both, exept my D was nowhere near $500). if i was shopping for an sks, i would look for a yugo M59 (no grenade launcher) or wait for the russians to arrive.

last D i bought was 450.00, was immaculate, came with side mounted /drill tapped scope mount and rings, synthetic monte carlo stock for the D model and a brand new mint wood stock/handguard and cleaning kit, 2 short mags and one 5/30.

if you are paying 500.00 for just the rifle and no accessories as above..... yer gettin hosed..... by a cz or vz or a norc m14

if you want an awesomew deal on a D model... with loads of accessories, P.M. Pilgrim... he has been holding one for me, and she is a beauty....... but i could pass it on to someone else.

I had one a few years ago. I liked using the AK mags, but I had feeding issues when it was cold, and it is cold alot in MB.

I paid $250 and it came with 5 5/30 E. German mags and 2 5rd Chinese mags. At today's prices that is like $800:eek:

Regular SKS rifles are the way to go for shooting, IMHO. If you just want one to have one, then go for it. I doubt they will be cheap again.

You wanted an honest opinion and this is one:

Back in the summer of 2004, I bought one from the SIR store in Winnipeg for $199 plus taxes. Keeping in mind the great customer service and the patron treatment of SIR, no warranty offered on the rifle since they had classified it as a surplus merchandise. It was a brand new never fired newly manufactured item!

I put about 300 rounds through and formed a very very low opinion about it. At each range session, for the first 3-5 shots was OK and grouped about 4-5" at 100 yards. After its barrel heated up, shots were going all over the target with no consistency; I say 15-20" grouping at best.

The second trip to the range, my front sight popped out and disappeared into the vegetation; and no warranty from the great SIR.

The fit and finish was beyond belief. I was wondering after witnessing this low level of quality control, its barrel may explode in my face one day without warning.

The most ridiculous thing I did was to put a scope on it. Every 4-5 rounds shot, I had to do a thorough zero on the scope. Anyway I got fed up pretty quick and let it go.

Shorty after that, I picked up an unfired Yugo m59/66. I still have it and been very happy with it. I shoot 1x1 ft steel plate at 200 yards with it consistently with tens of rounds at a time.
