Load for the bullet weight. Who made 'em doesn't matter. Plated bullets use cast bullet data.
"...using winchester 281..." 231? There's 231 data for both 9mm and .45 ACP on Hodgdon's site.

You must mean 231. Check out the Hodgdon link in the sticky at the top of this page. The best load (most accurate) I have found is 5.7gr. of W231 under a 230gr or 200 gr bullet. This is a very common load. I developed from 5.0 to 5.9gr. No crony yet so I don't know velocities.

can't say for the 9 as i don't load it but the .45 with 231 start at about 4.4-4.6 grains and work up. best load for function and accuracy will be around 5.0 -5.3 of 231.

5.9 under an 230 grn slug is a pretty hot load - approach with caution hodgdon lists a max of 5.3 granins of 231 with a 230 grn slug and a max of 5.9 with a 200 grn slug FYI

check it out ht tp://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp

hope this helps

Head over to the 1911 forums. 5.7gr. is probably the most used load. Anything under 5 is a waste of time.

Lymans 49th lists 5.2-5.8gr as a range for W231 under 230gr. This discrepency is what lead me to seak actual results from other people.

I have a bit of 9 and 45 data for 231. Enjoy.

9MM,
124Gr CMJ RN Frontier Bullet
Casing - Mixed
Primer - Win Small Primer

4.0Gr of Win 231@ 1.110 OAL gave me an average FPS of 915 and a PF of 113.
My notes were, mild, controllable, good target load.

4.3Gr of Win 231 @ 1.110 OAL gave me average fps of 986.

45ACP 230Gr CMJ Frontier RN
Win Large Pistol Primer
Temp 0c

4.6Gr of Win 231 @ 1.250 OAL gave me average fps of 662 PF of 152.
4.9Gr of Win 231 @ 1.250 gave me average fps of 695 average pf of 158. (that should seem higher, but who knows, thats what I got.)

Enjoy.
I use TiteGroup now as I found it to be less smoky than 231 and my casings came out cleaner.

for 45ACP - all these temps were around 0C or so my book tells me.
Springfield Loaded 1911 5"

With a 200Gr CMJ - OAL of 1.240
5.1-5.2Gr = 850FPS PF of 170
5.4Gr - 888FPS PF of 177
4,8Gr = 808FPS PF of 161
4.3Gr = 743 FPS

and for the 230Gr CMJ - OAL of 1.250
4.7Gr = 762FPS for a 175PF.
5.1Gr 800FPS for a 183PF.

9MM - temps around 20C
SIG P226 and STI Ranger II.
147GR CMJ - 1.140
3.5Gr = 930FPS

I use a Lee Classic Turret so my AutoDisk drops can sometimes vary. I a few charges before each batch I sit down and reload and they are more or less the same. + or - .1 gr.
