I'm looking for feedback on the 2009 Model 870 Express Tactical with Grey Powder Coat finish. any issues with the finish? has anyone heard of the finish flaking off?
I'm asking as I'm thinking of getting this gun and since the finish is different not like a flat black or blued model getting the gun restored down the road might be an issue.
Would like to hear from others who own this gun. Remington Model 81202

IMHO The Tactical moniker (for the most part) is Remington's latest move to push the Express/SPS line quality workmanship they are doing these days unto an unsuspecting, gullible buyer and charging them a premium for it. You'd be better off to find a used Wingmaster or Police model and apply a Duracoat or Armacoat finish in your favorite colour/cam pattern. That Beeson gentleman in the above post can help you with the add ons. You'll end up with a unique quality shotgun and the finish will look great and actually stay on.
I almost bought into the Desert Recon product when it first came out. My buddy did, a year later I am happy that I didn't.

I have seen a few of the new remmy 870's come through the shop to be refinished because of flaking, the finish they offer looks good in ads but thats about it. you would be better to find an old wingmaster and refinish it like wild thing said.

I've put a whack of shells through the exact SG you're describing with:

1. No issues at all and

2. No powdercoat flaking whatsoever.

Maybe I lucked out and got a good one, but my 870 Express Tactical has performed flawlessly, with ALL types of ammo, and the finish is as pristine as the day I bought it.

Guys I ended up ordering a other tactical model on that same link with the XS Ghost Ring & Blasted Black Oxide finish. This will be my new turkey gun all I need is to replace the choke tube. and might get a Knoxx or pistol grip style stock for it. I also bought a 870 compact model in 20ga. for my son for his first Turkey gun.

The express tacticals like the one shown all have the same finish except for the one with the pistol grip and fixed but. You can tell this by looking at the picture in the wholesale sports catalogue. Does anyone have the one with the pistol grip to vouch for this, I would think it might be phosphate coated?

i agree that your money would be much better spent buying a Police or Wingmaster receiver and working from there.

...but whats the problem with finish wear? this is supposed to be a 'tactical' shotgun -- have you seen what police and military shotguns look like?

it just amuses me that people want to build these badass combat shotguns but then if they get even a safe kiss theyre all upset. the more beat-up a shotgun is the better it looks.

I did own a 870 Express Tactical with Grey Powder Coat finish, my first gun this year. Took it to the range once and fired about 30 rounds through it. First time I cleaned it with rem oil huge chunks of the powder coat started coming off all over the place. Took the gun back to the dealer and got a plane Jane 870 express 4+1.

I kind of agree with what your saying, BUT if you bought a new truck and the paint starting peeling off wouldn't you complain or would you except it cause trucks are supposed to be rough around the edges. IF I bought something I would expect it to stay in the same condition it was when I bought it unless I have done something to cause it's condition to deteriorate other then cleaning it properly! NO?

I have this shotgun. I bought it for a camp gun project ( mesa stock etc ) so I really don't care about the finish since its going to be a beater gun

The coating on this gun is already flaking off just from minor handling and use

Don't buy this model if you are worried about the finish. The parkerized finish of the 870P is the way to go

of course, youre absolutely right. i was referring to finish wear on park and blued, had no idea this stuff was actually flaking off like cheap paint :runaway:

i never thought id see the day where even parkerizing - hell even matte blueing - gets cut as a cost-saving measure by a company. for a company thats actually set up for mass production like that parkerizing must work out to pennies per unit - yet even that is too much to ask on a $500 gun?
the express line just gets better and better. at this rate, soon theyll be selling them in the white.
