I am thinking of upgrading my rifle scope. I would like to return back to deer hunting in Saskatchewan and extend my range up to 400 yards.

I have a Browning A-Bolt II 30.06 with a BOSS.
I use premium factory loads of 150 grain.

I have a self imposed 200 yard limit mainly due to the poor accuracy. My current grouping is ~ 3-4 " at 100 yards from sand bags. I have tried a variety of 150 / 165 grain rounds and different BOSS settings with little improvement.

I would like to buy one good scope and perhaps move it to a different rifle if I can't get the A-bolt sorted out.

Is a Rapid-Z reticle worth the extra money for me as I'm not intending to shoot much further than 400 yards ?

Does Rapid-Z 600 really make sense on a 3x9 ?

Any thoughts are really welcome

I don't see why not. A 3X9 is fine out to 600. Maybe not for the paper punching, but for hunting sure. The military guys use a fixed 10 power out to 1000 I think.

I would be more concerned why my rifle only shoots 3-4 from sandbags at 100. That kind of accuracy works out to clean misses at 400 yards.

Fwiw, I've made shots in the range you are talking about at 4x several times.

Practise or get someone to look at your rifle, try some different loads, maybe a 180 gr.

I don't know if your rifle has iron sights or not, but do you have a scope on it now?
Does it shoot 3-4MOA for everyone?

You don't need a new scope unless your current scope is causing the poor groups by not holding zero. But listening to all of the raving about how great the BOSS is,you obviously just don't know how to adjust the BOSS properly.Everyone knows that a BOSS equipped rifle can put every bullet through the same hole.:D

I'd spend about $100 on a set of trigger springs for the Abolt first. Use the light spring, its great. I had an Abolt in 7mm STW that I couldn't get to shoot no matter what, changed the trigger spring and it came in line fast. The groups went from 1.5"-2" to 1/2-3/4" or from 2MOA to 1/2Moa.
