I just bought a so called varmint rifle for target shooting and would like to have the barrel LEGALLY shortened. Is there a gunsmith in Canada I can send it to?

Thanks

Yes.. most (maybe not all) gunsmiths should be able to shorten a barrel.... why is this even a post ?

I have heard that butchers can cut meat... ohhh I've also heard that mechanics can fix cars too

Thanks for your useless reply. I should have expected that given the people on this forum are just waiting to be triggered for some reason.

My local gunsmith won't do it he says too much chance of messing it up. I would like it to be a little lighter and shorter.

"Legally"? In what regard? Length? Keep it over 16 inches barrel length and 26 inches overall length and you will be fine. - dan

Thanks dan. I think I got the legal part on here just wondering if there's an expert who can do it. I don't mind shipping it.

You are looking for a 'smith who will do a proper crown, having set the barrel up an a lathe, properly indicated in on the bore? Which could require removal of the barrel from the receiver.
There are any number of gunsmiths who could do this. Jason at Gunco in Nepean; Casey at TacOrd; Keith at MilCun.com come to mind, but there are many more.
Perhaps you have received PMs from gunsmiths who are members here, and who have offered their services.
Something to consider - postage each way is going to be $30-$40. The work will be $100-$150. And that is if you have stripped the rifle right down to the barreled receiver.

You can check the regs but changing a factory barrel should be limited to 18.5" for Centerfire. You can buy a manf barrel shorter but you can't change a factory barrel to be shorter.

Dumb... of course it is.

YMMV... please confirm with regs... do not take this post as gospel... but I am thinking this is correct.

Get a quote and remember that if you ship a barreled action, you should have it fully insured for loss with signature both ways... so that adds up in a hurry. Then you add in the labour and down time.

So I hope you know that the current barrel is a shooter. if the barrel shoots now, it will shoot when shorterned albeit with a changed load (that can vary). If the barrel currently isn't a shooter, spending more money on it is unlikely to change your result unless there is a bulge near the muzzle.

Then compare all this to a prefit match barrel that will work and can be speced to pretty much anything you can dream up... I rarely run factory barrels anymore. They can prove expensive to muck around with if you have accuracy in mind.

I cut mine off with an hack saw, then had my friend( gunsmith) recrown it.
Maybe a 1/2 work.
I cut a 24 inch down to 19 inches.
Lost 117 fps.
.308 cal.

If you add your location to your profile we could give you better information.

Cutting the barrel reduced velocity about 30 fps per inch (assuming it is not a 22LR), but adds to barrel stiffness.

I don't believe you can LEGALLY cut a bolt action barrel shorter than 18 inches... and a semi shorter than 18.5 inches.

I cut and crown accurately, usually no more than $40. Postage for a barrelled action both ways will probably be more than that.

What is the make and model of the barrel in question?

Kind of surprising the number that don't know what the legal min. length for semi and Bolt action is till gun tech piped up, Location would be a help as well, cost wise, though that don't make a huge difference, I shipped one 150 miles, took 2x the length of time across country.
