Got the call my new Ruger precision is in and i originally ordered 308. I have the option of this or the 243 also. I have other 308 rifles already for long range shooting and i like them but im thinking maybe a new caliber could be fun. Also nicer for the wife and kids to shoot the 243. Main thing im struggling with is the barrel is almost 6 inches longer on the 243 and i really not a big fan of that longer look. The 6.5 is not an option either. I do not reload yet so again not something to consider needing new dies etc.... Any input would be nice . cheers

243.

New to you, less recoil for family. You'll want that extra barrel length for the increased velocity you need and want for distance.

If you don't reload, its pretty clear to me, go for the .308 ! There is plenty of good factory *match/target* ammunition and prices are fair.

Its very hard to find good factory ammo in .243w, when you find some its more likely hunting ammo, which is not terrible for long range/target shooting.

I wouldn't rule out 6.5 CM just cuz you don't reload....Winchester makes everything a factory 140gr load that shoots pretty good and if I remember correctly it is a 140 SMK bullet in them, my Desert Tech 6.5 liked them at under 1/2" groups

I would opt for the 243. You already have 308 caliber rifles for long range so why not try something new? I am picking up a savage in 243 when I get off shift. I reload though so I can't comment on factory ammo for either rifle as my 308 has only seen handloads. I am excited to see the performance of this cartridge compared to my 308.

go for the .243, , lower recoil, still easy to find factory ammo, , and good way to have an excuse to buy new stuff for a new calibre lol, i dont shoot 243 for anything, yet there is still one tucked away for a new hunter or shooter that wants to try :)

As I will hunt with this rifle it's hard to ignore the 26" compared to 20" barrel. Really wish the 243 came in a shorter version without having to replace the barrel rite away.

Also I'm sure the 308 with a brake for the kids and wife would be the same if not less felt recoil of a 243? I don't have any brakes so not sure about it. Just not range friendly I'm guessing with the blast.
