Got the call my new Ruger precision is in and i originally ordered 308. I have the option of this or the 243 also. I have other 308 rifles already for long range shooting and i like them but im thinking maybe a new caliber could be fun. Also nicer for the wife and kids to shoot the 243. Main thing im struggling with is the barrel is almost 6 inches longer on the 243 and i really not a big fan of that longer look. The 6.5 is not an option either. I do not reload yet so again not something to consider needing new dies etc. Neither one will be shot past 800-900yrds. Thats what the Barrett is for ;) Any input would be great!

Go for the .243Win. As you mentioned, you've already got 308's so you might as well switch it up. Sounds like a good compromise for a rifle that the kids and wife can shoot. The barrel might be longer, but a decent smith should be able to cut it to length and re-crown it for you for minimal cost. Or you might learn to like the longer barrel and the extra velocity that you'll have with the already fast .243 bullet.

If wife and kids might be in the shooting mix, leave the barrel as is... greatly reduces noise when shooting and that is a big negative to this audience.

Will help keep muzzle rise down too.

Watch the barrel twist... odds are it is not an 8. 87 to 95gr bullets will likely make for very happy shooting.

If they enjoy it, they will shoot it... when the barrel is burnt out, you can build ANYTHING you want.... as long as it is something they can also enjoy.

Wonderful problem to have.
