Need help and info on old shotgun?

One the guys I work with grandfater passed away and he got this shotgun. I think it is a shot gun
It is a Winchester break open type and it is a 44 shot Kinda looks like a .410 but not realy. Looking for info on it and what kind of shells it takes.
The bore is smooth.

The 44 shot was a pre-cursor to the .410. Most of these over time were bored to .410 2.5", make sure a gunsmith has verified the chamber and declared the gun sound before trying it.
