Hi all,
I am totally new to this area and need some advice.
I just received a new Bevan King barrel un-chambered in 6mm and want to build a moderately light and compact hunting rifle for deer, varmints and target shooting. I am not sure of caliber yet (6mm Remington? 6-284?), but it will be a left hand rifle as I am tired of shooting backwards ;)

What is the best way to go about this….should I buy a new action and build from parts, or buy a used rifle for the action and then re-barrel? Can you direct me toward any sources of info or parts? I have some ideas about what to do and who to call but want to check with those that really know what they are doing.

Thanks and Cheers

Is the barrel a contoured blank with no threads? If it is threaded, you may be limited in your options. You will need to find a good gunsmith to chamber and mount the barrel. There are several good ones on this CGN.

How much you want to spend will also dictate what you do. You can buy a used rifle, like you said, or a new left hand model. The problem is, I don't know of any low priced new left hand rifles.

You could buy a left hand Montana Rifleman action. They sell for $646.

Next is a stock. There are many options. What material would you like? You can get a fairly inexpensive stock from Boyds - a laminate will go for ~US$90 plus shipping etc.

Caliber depends on many things. Do you reload? If not, then you are pretty much stuck with the .243, 6mm Rem or .240 Wby. Will you be hunting large deer or small ones? What is the twist rate on your barrel?

OOPs I left lots out, thanks 1899

Barrel is contoured (looks like a medium contour ) but not threaded. I will reload for it. I want a moderate power calibre, don't need to push the bullet to the maximum velocity possible...I have .30 cals and .338WM for really big stuff. Deer here are pretty big. As for stock, I am thinking light but not sure about wood or synthetic. Rate of twist is 1:10 so it should stabilize heavier bullets fine. Do you have any reviews or first hand experience with the Montana Action? That was one I have seen. Cost is not really a problem although I don't want to mortgage my house.

Cheers

I have no personal experience with the Montana Rifleman action, so I can not comment on it.

I have bought stocks from this company, and they inlet for Montana actions:

If you would like something unique, then why not a .240 Belted Rimless Nitro Express? I believe Midway, and others, have brass and dies. It is a classy cartridge, and you won't see many around. That said, it may be had to sell. A step down in exoticness may be the 6mm Rem AI. It would still give lots of oompf but with readily available brass for fireforming.

Keep us posted as your project progresses!

".240 Belted Rimless Nitro Express"
I like the sound of that :)....unless I find a "6mm Ballbuster Extreme" or something similar ;)

I think I will probably go with something a bit easier, I am not into the serious aspects of reloading ...yet. 6mm Rem AI sounds good.

Thanks for the input.

Bevan King has the 6mm Ackley Imp reamer and it is a good one. I had him make me one of these quite a few years ago and it shot like crazy. The chamber was so good that fired brass barely showed an expansion ring, and I didn't pussyfoot around with the loads.

Same 1:10 twist as you have. It would shoot 100 gr bullets at well over 3300 fps into 3/4" or better and the cases lasted forever. This was out of a 24" barrel.

6mm Rem AI sounds like a good one

I would buy a new Remington CDL left hand in 243 Winchester and pull the tube. You could get the action blueprinted, install the new barrel, and use the beautiful CDL walnut stock, OR re-stock it with a quality fiberglass model.
