Need Help Choosing 45. 1911

So I'm taking my restricted firearms course sometime next month, and I wanted my first handgun to be the iconic 45. 1911 (not quite sure which is more available in eastern Canada, 45. Or .45ACP)

I likely won't purchase one for a while, as I first want to get a 12 gauge Mossberg 500, but it doesn't hurt to prepare!

I want to go with a starting budget between $300-$500

I want it to have the classic design, dark blued or parkerized finish. Nothing fancy like skeleton triggers or combat hammers, but modern improvements are certainly welcomed.

My first choice was the Rock Island Armory/Armscor Government model A1, but unfortunately I couldn't find one for sale anywhere, let alone Canada. I figured instead of continuing my search I'd ask my fellow Canucks for their opinion!

Canada Ammo or Marstar usually have a decent selection of Norinco's. Wolverine is good for SAM's .

Both are affordable entry level guns with decent resale value ( just in case you don't fall in love with the gun like you think you will ).

GSG/Sig 1911 in 22 is a better option imo. Cheaper to purchase, and ALOT cheaper to feed, it has identical controls to the 1911. Lets you test the waters without having to make a big investment in ammo and a gun.
 
For that price, SAM. From what I can tell, great stuff.

If you can get a couple hun more saved up, you can get a low end STI, tho that is made in the Phillipines too, and assembled in the US.

For the money, you can't beat the SR1911 made by Ruger. Really really nice for the money.

~300: Norinco

Both are decent budget pistols. Norinco is overbuilt but a bit rough while the SAM is a little nicer done (IMO).

If you aren't dead set on a 45acp, maybe try your hands at a GSG1911 (22LR) instead. Lets you practice proper pistol handling and 1911 controls with the cheap cheap price of 22LR. Then when you save a bit of money you can decide if you like the 1911 platform and put some money down on a higher quality one.
 
For what you are looking for I'd go for one of the SAM military models or one of the unmarked Norinco 1911A1's that came from the Can Am deal.

However, I don't think you could go too far wrong with an STI Spartan or Ruger SR1911 [if you could abide stainless] for a few bucks more.

You won't get much for 3-500. Not even used. You're RIA runs almost $700 and it's made in the Phillipines. Not high end stuff, but serviceable. Ditto for the Norincos. Any new firearm requires a trigger job.
And you join a club, not a range.
 
I'd recommend a Norc 1911A1. Low priced (lots of money left to upgrade if desired although as a new shooter I think the OP would be wasting his money), tough as nails, reasonably accurate and mine has been as reliable as a claw hammer.
