Need help choosing ammo for my first .22

I'm a World War II enthusiast so when I saw the non-restricted GSG STG 44 Schmeisser .22 LR I jumped on it.

This is my first .22 (in fact my first rimfire) and I'm not sure which .22LR HV ammo to get for it. So far I looked on the SFRC website and found "CCI 22LR 36gr Mini-Mag High Velocity HP" and "CCI 22LR 40gr Mini-Mag High Velocity Lead RN" that are in stock. Now, since I don't know which brands are reliable for rimfire ammo (for my rifle) I'm not sure which one to get.

Which ammo would you recommend for a GSG STG-44? Another newbie question: the rifle specify that the caliber to be used is .22 LR HV but I guess I can feed standard velocity .22 LR too?
 
Go to the LGS and buy a bunch of different 50 boxes of whatever they have in stock. Then you'll have a variety of different choices to try. Every 22 is different, this is the only way to figure out what your specific gun prefers.

HV is probably recommended because standard velocity might not have enough power to reliably cycle the bolt. But you won't hurt anything by trying it.
 
Cabela's has Choot Em's, CCI .22LR Mini-Mag Troy Landry Edition Rimfire Ammunition for $37.99 (300 rounds). I think this a good choice. The price is rather high but I suppose we have to grin and bear it. Good Luck with the new gun.

I believe the Troy Landry ammo is pretty much regular CCI Minimags
 
Trial and error will be the only way to find the best ammo for your .22. Like Suther said, buy a bunch of different ammo and just go out for a range day with your cleaning kit and have some fun! Some 22's will like the more expensive stuff, some will like the cheaper stuff. In semi autos (or mine, at least), a round nose bullet tends to feed the best and have the least issues. My 10/22 loves American Eagle and Mini Mags, but if I run CCI Blazer, it stove pipes every 4th or 5th shot. Just the nature of the beloved .22 LR. Plus, who can argue with an excuse to get out to the range? Happy shooting!

^^^ This and cleaning the barrel on changes will be a better way of assuring the new ammo is effective .. I would run several mags as well before changing unless it does not cycle at all.
