There is nothing quite as easy as spending someone else's money so I figured I could find an answer or at the very least some direction. I need a scope for my Remington 700 Tactical in .223! I am relatively inexperienced when it comes to to shooting optics. Is there a "sweet spot" price point where your quality/features are crossing the cost arc? Here's what the rifle will be used for:

- Target shooting and load development on a 100 yard range primarily.
- Limited shooting past 100y for now
- Looking at 300$ price range but have funds available if required and common sense can be averted.
- not brand loyal

As I said I'm just getting into going to the range and I'd like to have a reliable scope to shoot and work on loads and just play with at the range. I'm not looking at anything past 100y for a long while, mostly because I find it more fun to tinker with loads and have fun shooting with my wife at the range. I was thinking something in the 10x range, but a bit more magnification is never a bad thing.

Ok, since I posted I did some research and I've found the Bushnell Legend HD 4.5-14x44 in a mil-dot. Most of what I've read seems to say these are decent optics at the price. Anyone have any first hand experience with them? Light transmission is at 89% which isn't bad and it certainly fits my budget.

Bushnells fixed 10x would be pretty decent for your application as well. I don't have any experience with the scope you mention. You could likely picked up a used 6-18 off the exchange as well as long as you're not in a hurry. Redfield/bushnell will be good bang for the buck scopes. I've got a Falcon 2.5-10 that I really like, but I think I paid close to $500 for it. Excellent eye relief, and to my eye optics that are on par with leupold VXIII's.

Dunno about the Legends anymore....they use to be good, all the side focus parallax models are made in China now. $300 for Chinese glass just makes me cringe...

Falcon's warranty sucks...the website says lifetime warranty but what they don't say is that they've only been doing that for the last 18 months or so. Basically if you don't have a receipt, you don't have a warranty. This is a huge deal when you can spend a little more to buy a Vortex or Leupold and get a better scope and hassle free warranty. Resale value is definately affected.
