Cosmoline is just thick petroleum jelly. Comes off with any degreaser. Varsol is cheap and it works. Field strip your rifle and drop the whole thing in a tub of varsol and leave it there for 24 hours. Wipe off the cosmoline with a rag, oil the steel and BLO(Boiled Linseed Oil) the stock.
Hose it down with SIMPLE GREEN. Its non toxic and works very well. Follow with super hot water to rinse and chuck the metal in the oven on a very low heat to dry. Apply protection of choice.
ive had awesome results with mineral oil and wd-40 with my sks...wd-40 works especialy well with the little hose attachment for getting into hard to reach areas
Best I have found is "Break Free" Powder Blast. Its in an aerosol can so you can blast parts with pressure, and it does not leave a white residue like some cleaners do. The smell is not to bad either. It leaves parts nice and clean ready for lubrication.
