Need help dating a Webley MKIV

Hey Guys,

I have a nice, tidy Webley MKIV.

Can you please help me with the production date. I need no other info on the gun.

Marks are as follows;

left side of barrel, just ahead of cylinder, crown over BV, BP, and NP

Cylinder is marked the same way

Top strap is marked Webley and Scott LTD Birmingham

Right side of barrel is marked Webley, with the winged bullet

serial is A76607

Bottom of barrel shows 607

Face of cylinder shows the serial number as well

Right side of top strap is marked Made in England

Left side of top strap is marked Mark IV .38

Any assistance anyone can provide as to proof of production date would be appreciated.

Nice gun, good shape. Can't help with the production date since I'm not at home. All I can tell you is it's chambered for .38 S&W (if you weren't aware)

Yup, got the .38 figured ok. If there are any cues on the gun that might help you figure out a build date, let me know.

A prefix serial numbers started in May 1947 at A8 and ceased at A100599 in Mar. 1957 when a B prefix started.

Looks like mine was produced between 1954 and 1957.

Good call. It's probably for the best anyway. Maybe you'll meet a younger revolver or a hot semiauto and make little spent casings together.

I seem to remember that the date is stamped on the frame, right side under the grips. Just the last two digits of the year. Maybe the left side. Worth looking on both sides, in any case.

Is it a prohibited or restricted barrel length? Nice old revolver, I was taught to shoot with one years ago (althought it was a .455 cal). Many of the shorter barreled .38 ones were police issue.

I checked under the grips. No markings on the frame, under the grips, just the serial number The grips have the serial scratched into them as well. I will yield to the Webley site (link above) which showed a 1950's date.

The barrel is short enough to make the gun 12.6

Okay, we had one here a few years back, had "'52" under the grips. Guess all of them weren't marked the same way.
