After many thousands of rounds through my 4.2" 686 I find the hammer is difficult to lock back into single action. Being pretty much new to revolvers I'm wondering if anyone can offer advice as to what is worn/loose. Up until recently it was easil put into SA by lightly pulling back on the hammer, now it must be brought but and sort of "jiggled" for lack of a better term. I am also experiencing a lot of light strikes which I blame on a very likely worn out hammer spring. I have parts on the way to fix that, just need to figure out this other issue...

Contact Murray Charleton Enterprises here in Victoria and have Murray rework your revolver. He has been Smith and Wesson warranty for 40 years and has built hundreds of winning PPC guns...

I much prefer to fix it myself if I can but considering how many rounds of full power .357 I've run it could probably use some professional care. Any idea how muc $$ a rework would run?

From what you describe, it sounds as if the mainspring is no longer properly engaging the hammer stirrup. Failing that a sheared hammer stud can also give similar issues, but not nearly as common as the aforementioned.

I'll pop it open and take a look, it definitely needs a new mainspring. It no longer sets off small rifle primers reliably and I'm even getting a lot of light strikes with small pistol primers. Not bad considering it has about 5000 rounds plus tens of thousands of dry fire. At worst the rework mentioned by guntech is very reasonable. $65-120 depending on the work needed.

As far as not setting off primers, check to see if the strain screw has backed off. It should be seated tight. It isn't used to lighten the trigger pull.
