Hello folks, Crover here with a technical question for those with old Mossberg shotguns.

I recently came into possession of an old Mossberg 500 model Lakefield ABR.

Here it is: http://imgur.com/a/dQd1x

Absolutely beautiful, damn near mint in condition with just a few scratches here and there, and a blemish on the stock.

I had however heard that the old Mossberg 500s had a different forend tube assembly (the cylinder the action bars are attached to and the forend is wrapped around on). This particular shotgun seem to be one of those models, as I am unable to remove that part of the action. Doing a full teardown, I can remove all the guts from the receiver after taking the barrel and trigger group out, and I can also unscrew the forend nut from the forend tube assembly and remove the forend.

But the tube itself that is wrapped around the mag tube is seemly locked into place, meaning I cannot remover if off the mag tube and trully clean the action bars.

I had also hear that the only solution to this complication involve removing the mag tube and installing a modern one, but frankly this shotgun is so beautiful and well preserved I would never consider tearing it to pieces like that.

So, can I remove the forend tube assembly, and if that's the case, how?

Thank you for reading through this, and I hope you can help me out :)

Sincerely,

Dave A.K.A. The Crover

To take it apart fully the mag tube has to be removed. There is a stop on the tube under the for end that prevents the fore end from coming off. The tube unscrews counter clockwise. You may have to use a strap wrench and a heat gun to loosen any thread locker at the receiver end. The tube once removed allows the removal of the slide assembly to the rear.

That seems to be the case. Thank you for the tips and the know-how :)
