My Google-fu is weak today. I am in the market for a new bolt action rifle to be used for plinking/target shooting at up to 200 yards. Looking to spend around $1000. Here is my wish list in order of importance:

- chambered in 5.56x45
- able to take AICS pattern magazines
- 1/2"-28 threaded barrel
- 16" barrel (up to 20" would be ok)

I've looked at the Ruger American Ranch and the Mossberg MVP but I want to avoid LAR-15 magazines for this one (plus, I've owned a Mossberg MVP and hated the sloppy bolt). What else should I be looking at? Thank you.

Would the Ruger American Ranch 06965 be compatible with AICS mags if dropped into a chassis?

Usually not since the bolt face sits so high. You would be better off with a 2 lug action such as the Remington 783, Savage 110 (10-16 as well), Remington 700, and so on. The 783 and 700 are both available in 16" barrels in a 223 chamber. Not sure if the NATO chamber is a big deal or not. Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard are excellent choices.

Good luck with finding a 223x45 rifle. NOW that the government has banned quite a few rifles and shotgun. My bolt action Mossberg .223/5.56 rifle and my 12 and 20 gage shotguns ARE on that band list.

THE KICKER IS: I'm in a wheelchair and love hunting and shooting at my local gun club. With the very few pleasures that are left in life, why does the government want to take my guns away?

Oh sorry, I remember why now, because criminals are using the same type of guns we use BUT theirs are illegally smuggled in with NO serial # for the most part to be traced back.
So now it means "I am a criminal in the blind eyes of the law"!

I just ordered the Ruger from IRunGuns. The older rotary mag model. I've got a bad feeling LAR-15 mags won't be around much longer and didn't want another paperweight if I went with the newer AR mag model. The plan will be to drop it into a Magpul Hunter stock if/when they ever get around to releasing their new PMAG 10 5.56 AC mags.
