Brothers birthday. Has a 300 win mag bolt action, looking to get him some glass for it but im out of my depth on whats out there. Southern ontario so farthest shot would prob be 250 ft. Thinking a 2-10 or something of that nature, lookin to spend around 500 bucks with rings. Wondering what users here would recommend

Thanks

There far too many to pick from. I have a 3-9 Leupold VX1 simple cross hair reticle and use for south western Quebec that I like. There are some Bushnell scopes that are low cost / good value in the sub 400 range.

I think around 400 Canadian, I'm curious about these after bunch of research and will likely give on a shot on one of my rigs. Would be a good one to look at I believe for your bro!

Not that he needs to long range yet the availability to do it down the road is there, it's dimensions and weight are on point, it should have enough eye relief especially at 4.5x where it will live and shoot most of the time but ability to use the simple reticle could come in handy and give him something to look forward to developing out when he's found his load and wants to set it up fully.

I did quick look at the reticle for a 308 I have and if the drops confirm in actual shooting then this is what it would look like. You always have to remember to dial up to maximum magnification so any decal I would have made will start with that reminder for a long shot on game as you'll be ramped up and easy to forget so start with @14x and make in pretty big letters ;), note, the reticle has 4 hash marks below main crosshair, the yardages listed for those hash marks then there are 'wind dots' out the sides of those hash marks...I calculated the kmh wind of those so here's how my 308 example decal should look when done, he may never need to develop out for deer hunting but for coyotes, range play days and just getting better with it having that ability is pretty fun and then he doesn't need to go scope shopping down the road if he wants to start expanding his game. And sounds like these dual erector spring Burris scopes hold zero and take beatings so by all I can read I'm seeing a solid value here.

@14x
Zero = 200 (I would not have the zero in my decal, I zero most centerfires big game rifles above 2500 fps at 200)
255 - 16 kmh
352 - 18 kmh
440 - 20 kmh
530 - 20 kmh

I’m in southern Ontario also and as per our regulations we can’t ‘hunt’ with anything over 270 calibre. 300 WinMag is great but a tad over what’s permitted, UNLESS it’s the only thing handy when a coyote is in your backyard harassing sheep. Animal damage control….just a heads up. Cheers
