Hey Guys!

I went to the local gun shop today and saw that shooting lead would be ALOT cheaper than FMJ bullets. I bought 500, 200gr LSWC for .45ACP. After reading some reviews, when my post was a little slow going, I bought some Winchester 231. Now when I look in my Lyman 49th and find the 200gr LSWC that looks like the one I have, I look under 231 and there's a *. At the bottom of the page it says that "*"-Designates use of CCI Primer.

Does that mean I can't use my 2000 Winchester LP primers?

.45 acp load

Check around , like for instance the Hogdon load data center and you will find lots of good loading info for that combination and there is no reason that you cannot use your win primers as long as you employ safe and reasonable loading practices , start low and work up to a safe velocity and presure level. printed recipies are there for a reason !

5.3 gr of 231 under those 200 gr LSWC makes IDPA/IPSC power factors, is very accurate and light shooting. There is no significant difference between one large pistol primer over another. Federal uses an older priming compound that ignites easier beyond that I have never witnessed over the chrono any significant difference.

Take Care

Lee reloading book says 5.1 to 5.5 max of W-231.
I use 5.5 and all 3 of my 45acp pistols liked that load.
Start at 5 grains and work up the load to an accurate, positive slide cycling.
The brand of primer is not important, unless your shooting 1000 yards.
I use WLP also!

I run that same 200 swc with 231 and load between 5.0 and 5.9 grains. need 5.4 to make major in my gun but it always works fine . I have used Federal, cci and winchester primers and cannot find more tha 5 fps of so on the chrono. If your gun has not had a throat job and polish the swc might be a little tempermental to feed. I load mine to 1.235". My fun plinking load is 5.2 of 231 and it will cycle my 5" gov't model fine with a 17.5 lb spring in it. I've seen guy down in the mid to high 4's with 231 for bullseye work light spring etc. Hope some of this helps.

"...ALOT cheaper than FMJ bullets..." No question. However, your pistol needs to be set up to shoot SWC's. The feed ramp needs to be extended about half way up the sides of the chamber. Assuming that hasn't already been done. Aids reliable feeding with SWC's. Aids feeding period, but it's essential for SWC's.
Relax, it's not hard to do. No rotary tools though. Use a fine jeweller's file(those wee file sets) to do it. Chamfer the aft sides of the chamber about half way up.
"..."*"-Designates use of CCI Primer..." That just means that those were the primers used by Lyman's ballistics engineers when they developed the load. Not a big deal. Your pistol won't blow up just because you don't use the book primer.
Taper crimp only for .45's.
