need help for long range rifle

Why not? It's hollow point bullet still consider as expanding bullet.
There is a reason that Sierra says that the Match Kings aren't hunting bullets.

That you had crappy penetration, is to be expected.

If you had posted:

"I shot a big whitetail buck withan SMK, guess what happened."

We would all have wrote "I bet the bullet failed!" and "Lack of penetration, right?" because that's what happens.

Do you really think that Sierra make GameKings just for show? MatchKings are more expensive, why don't they just recommend that you use them for everything?

No one is saying that you need premium bullets to hunt deer, any decent cup-and-core game bullet would work just fine, and a .30-'06 is just fine to 400 yards with a good bullet.

Not so - the teeny hollow point in match-grade bullets is an aerodynamic feature to enhance the long-range performance, NOT its expansive qualities. See post #12 above.

Don't you have hunting regulations in Canada that determine what you may lawfully use to kill game? Here in yUK we have to abide by the rules of velocity/muzzle energy/designated type of ammunition on the various sizes of game usw, or suffer the consequences.

If you don't hunt any where near Ontario I would get a 50bmg, there good out to just past 450meter, ( I am told thats even farther than 450 yards)

If you do hunt in Ontario please stop.

:weird:

Invest some of that money in English and grammar classes!

Obviously you fail to realize that not everyone's first language is English.

To the OP: hunting with match bullets not indicated as hunting bullets is grossly negligent. Buy some proper hunting bullets, there are hundreds to choose from in the .30cal's.

As for reccomendations for rifle/caliber, it depends on if you want to punch paper at distances or make kill shots at those distances.

For punching paper out to 1000 yds there are plenty that will do it from .223 right up to 50Cal. .260 is a great all around cartridge for paper punching to 1000yds and deer out to 500+ with the RIGHT bullet.

I know many long range hunters do use SMK without problems. They have shot elks for years and the SMK bullet do expand nicely.
A tiny hole in one side and a grapefruit size in the exit hole.

I'll buy 300gr SMK bullets for hunting and nothing else (hunting bullets).
