About the only guys buying the 5mm guns were the fellas that were doing centerfire conversions to small CF calibers. It involves threading the receiver tube, as well as fabricating the front section of the bolt. But a lot of them ended up in Hornet based wildcat calibers. They are a really well designed action, proofed originally for far higher pressures than they would see if they were used for Rimfire cartridges, they have a decent set of locking lugs, but ya just cannot find affordable ammo anywhere here. 5.7x28 rifle, anyone?

I think of the 5mm Remington every time the subject of the likes of the .17 WSM comes up. Ammo dried up, guns became almost worthless. Some demand as donor actions for conversion drove the price up a wee bit, and every now and again a really nice one gets sold to fill a spot in a collection, but otherwise, demand isn't very high.

Aquila in Mexico is making the 5mm again, and it would stand to reason, with the popularity of the .20 cal CF guns that the other ammo makers might get on board again, but they seem to be having a hard time keeping up with the popular calibers, so have not got the motivation to really consider short run of anything that is in low demand.

We seem to repeatedly hear the same story, that 'someone is working on it', as far as importing Aquila ammo in to Canada, but it never seems to materialize.

I'd shell out $50-$100 for a conversion donor without too much thought. More than that and I don't really need one, if you know what I mean.

Cheers
Trev
