I was under impression that as long as a flash hider is made out of a same barrel and no separation between two. it is consider as a part of the barrel. I am asking about this because I want to keep it as a Minimum length ( 18. 5 inches ) as possible with a g36 k type flash hider. However, I have been told that an actual barrel length is based on a rifling and it can not be disturb. Could anyone help me with this?

The flash hider being part of the barrel is the law for the states as long as its welded on. For example they can buy krinkovs with a goofy fake supressor that makes the barrel 16 inchs. The actual barrel of your rifle must be 18.5

If the flash hider is an integral part of the barrel, it counts as barrel length. For example, Herron Arms can machine a flash hider into the end of the barrel. Personally, I would just accept the extra length and have the barrel threaded as normal. That way you can change muzzle devices, and you have something to protect the crown and rifling from damage. Plus if you ever break off one of the flash hider prongs, you need a whole new barrel.

I would go for the 18.5 barrel then add the muzzle device. One less inch isn't worth the loss of options. I have the same configuration for 3 gun and there is little difference swinging the ACR around compared to my 10.5 AR.

ive seen shotguns with venting cut into the barrels, sso why couldnt you do that with the ACR Barrel.

it is based on the barrel being a single piece. It doesn't matter where the rifling stops. the same thing could be done with any nr rifle.

Just some fyi:

Barrel length

(2) For the purposes of this Part, the length of a barrel of a firearm is

(a) in the case of a revolver, the distance from the muzzle of the barrel to the breach end immediately in front of the cylinder, and

(b) in any other case, the distance from the muzzle of the barrel to and including the chamber,

but does not include the length of any component, part or accessory including any component, part or accessory designed or intended to suppress the muzzle flash or reduce recoil.

Thanks Shawn,

So the lesson for today is?

If you want to know the answer to a legal question related to firearms you should first try to look up the answer from a reliable source like the firearms act and not just ask on an internet forum where you will get 10 different opinions (some right, some wrong) before you get a definitive answer.
