Hello, was helping an old gentleman clean up his basement and he gave me this old shotgun. I'm not a shotgun guy and I don't know much of anything about old ones. He told me he thought it was a Purdey? Any help would be appreciated.

Break her open and show the symbols stamped into the metal. Remove forearm first.

Almost certainly English, almost certainly NOT a Purdey. A Purdey will have the name engraved on the lockplate and the top rib, including the company address on the top rib. This could be quite faint if the rib has been heavily polished and refinished. Obvious problems are the hammers not aligned, indicating a lock problem, broken and repaired stock at the wrist, damaged left hammer with incorrect screw. A couple of good pictures of the proof marks and the inscription on the rib should pin it a little closer. What condition are the bores in? J.

The Bores are actually in very good shape considering the rest of the gun. Headspace is off, I don't think id ever shoot it, but i'll clean it up and repair what I can.

The action is a Jones underlever design showing Birmingham black powder proof and gauged as a tight (for 12 ga) 13 gauge bore diameter. It is almost certainly chambered for short 2 1/2 inch 12 gauge cartridges, but chambers need to be measured, of course.
The bores may well have been lapped so that they look as they do, and needs to be measured for wall thickness to evaluate them.
The gun shows some evidence of abuse, but could be restored. The Jones underlever is quite a satisfactorily strong action, which can be tightened by a skilled workman.
Is there no marking on the rib ? Usually a maker or retailer of the gun is engraved there.
