need help in identification of my new rifle!

ok, i got this on a trade + $20.00, its a 308 cal rifle. it has a side mounted permenant magazine that holds 5 rounds and feeds them under and around the bolt to the left!!, on the barrel, it is stamped "made in Austria" and and the other side says"globe firearms ltd ottawa-canada", from the little bit of research i have done , i figure its a krag of some sort, anyone know much about these and where and how i could date it or find a history of it. i was also told that it is a war surplus rifle that was rebarreled and imported to canada?

Globe Firearms seemed to convert a lot of surplus rifles. I believe what you have is a converted Krag-Jorgensen.

What is it registered as? :mrgreen:
 
Globco / Globe...i had a model Mohawk semi and it was a conversion....they were not great firearms, but serivceable and effective.

I trust the info on Krag-Jorgenson would be accurate.
 
Defintately have a smith check it out.......I don't know how well a krag action would stand up to repeated .308 loads.
That, and Globe did some very brutal work on everything they touched, it would have been rebarreled by them. Good chance you got yourself a paperweight there......... :oops:
 
Globe did convert (bubba) a lot of surplus arms in the 60s including converting Norwegian Krags to .308WCF.
 
so basically i got a bubba junk from what a guy in fredericton told me , without looking at it, but you know it works real good shot it yesterday, real smooth good tight groups after i got into it, and you know i like it, its an oddity, and so am I, lol. ill be keepinf it for now and plan to hunt with it, can anyone direct me to where as i might find info on globe firearms or on how to date this oddity!!

Was it a Russian SVT conversion to 303 Brit?


thats the one, I've seen a few floating around but not many

I had a fellow call me up prior to registration asking if I wanted to buy a semi 303. I said sure. The guy wanted $40 for it (no mag). I grabbed it and found a mag at a gunshow in Winnipeg for the same price. $80 for a rifle that liked to push the primers out (headspace me thinks :roll: ). I have to admit, it was different...

Talk about odd.

I got a free Schmidt-Rubin in 30-30 Winchester one time.

Don't know who converted it but it was rumoured that it was done in Canada, becasue Palfrei, an American who had a site up for a while with oddball milsurps and Bubbas in his collection had one that he swore was of Canadian origin. Maybe Globe..

The stock was so butchered it was irredeemable and it was missing the mag which would cost $100 to replace IF I could find one, so I gave the action and barrel to a 'smith pal of mine. The barrel was pristine.

I still have the bolt and stock for some reason.
