Hi everyone, income tax return should be in soon, and I want a new scope. I am kinda new to the world of rifles, got my licenses 4 months ago. Actually I have a Savage Mark II BTV .22lr rimfire rifle. The scope on it is a Tasco 2.5-10x 42mm. Seems I have to re-zero it every time I get to the range, my rings are always tight, so its not because they are getting loose. And I think my crosshair reticule is too thick, and I want something thinner.

Now, let me say, I have a budget to respect, so please no high end scope lines.

I use my .22lr at the range, 200 yards max.

I want this scope to take some recoil, it will not always stay on a .22lr, got my hunting license, and wish to get a hunting riffle of decent caliber eventually.

After some research (based on a budget remember? ;) ) I pick a few choices, and I need your input on this.

Bushnell 3-9x40 Trophy XLT

Nikon ProStaff 3-9x40

Mueller Optics 4.5-14x 40mm AO

Am I right in my choices?

Is the parallax that importand, I see some have it, others dont.

Is a reticule making a huge difference?? Are you recommending one, or what are the ones to avoid?

All the help I can get would be really appreciated.

Thanks!!

Frank

There is no point in buying a scope that you can use on more than one rifle. I'm sure you can get by with one of the inexpensive 3-9 rimfire Bushnells, should be around $60.00 with rings.
Then save some cash for your next scope purchase when you buy your next rifle. FS

the AO option is very important on a .22 rifle as it is fired from 20 out to 100 plus yards and a centrefire scope with a 100 yard parallax setting will be all over the target at 25 yards. if it is for hunting then a fixed 50 yard ..22 scope will probably be ok. I agree that a good .22 scope will not fit well with a centrefire hunting rig. probably better to get a good .22 scope now and save for a hunting scope to go on your hunting rifle.

also my savage mk11 wears a bushnell trophy 6-18X40Ao scope and it seems to be good out to 100 yards at least for target work - fairly fine cross hair

most of all enjoy your rifle.

also if you use different ammo each range trip you wil have to re zero your rifle each time and also check if the factory bases are tight on the rifle.

hope this helps
Andy

For a cheap .22 scope I would say the Bushnell Banner 6-18 x 40 AO is a good choice.

It will be useless on a hunting rifle though.

Of your choices the Mueller is the only option that will work, as you can adjust the AO for shooting at closer distances.

For a hunting scope you will want something better anyways. The Bushnell 3200 Elite 3-9 x 40 is a great scope for about $220, and is my choice for a couple of my hunting rifles.

Look into the redfield 3-9x40 as well. I recently compared it with the bushnell XLT and the glass was much clearer on the redfield. They are basically old leupold vari-x 11's being sold under redfield name and a really good scope for $199.

Man, first I heard that the Bushnell Banner 6-18 was useless as a hunting scope. It held up fine on a .243 I've owned is is still ticking great on my buddies .243. He's tickled to death with it. If your into target shooting with any rifle a scope with an AO is a great idea. I'm with the camp that says buy the best scope you can afford to leave on your .22 that does the job you need it to do. FWIW I've seen Wallmart has a 4-12 Banner with AO that might do the trick well and be in budget. When you step up to a centrfire hunting rig get that 3200 3-9. Its a sweet scope for the price and I'm reading that the Ontario Warranty centre is really good too. My $.02.

The sheer size of the scope would make me call it useless. I guess if your in a field hunting gophers thats a different story, as it is practically target shooting anyways, but I am thinking more trudging through thick bush grouse hunting kinda hunting. That and I will never put anything less than a 3200 series scope on any rifle I intend to hunt with again. Not much more money but a far superior product.

I have had a Trophy series crap out on me just riding around on the quad, and it was cased.

I have a 3200 3-9 x 40 on my .243 and it has been through alot with no ill effects.

Im not one to throw my money away, and will use irons if I can in hunting situations, but if it has to have a scope, I consider the 3200 series a minimum. I don't want to miss a shot because of a scope ever again.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the inputs. Especially about the AO setting. I will have to go to find and look through these 2 scopes first.

I would never swap scopes out or buy a cheap scope for big game hunting...

Been there, and now I know, its not worth being cheap cause it will cost you way more in the long run than a quality scope would cost from the beginning.

It costs money to keep going back to the range and try to figure out what you did wrong, when very often it was the cheap scope that let you down.:(

Im only putting Leopolds minimum, on my rifles from now on.
Forgive me for being biased, but I like North American stuff more than Japanese, and in the long run they will save you lots of time and money!.:D

I could say much more but Im not sure if anyone is listening?.

I need the cheap scope for my .22 :D In fact, I want something with thiner crosshair. For big game, I'll get something else. Right now as stated above, I have a Tasco on my Savage Mark II that I want to replace & I have too a red dot Bushnell TRS-25 on my 10/22 and this one I love it. I was supposed to use it on my SKS, but this one I'll keep it iron sights.

A CGN user gave me 3 Tasco scopes a few months back to help me start. I installed one on my Mark II BTV, one on my gf Mark II F (both Tasco 2.5-10) and the third one is giving a hard time. When I'll change, I'll give them to some ppl around me starting and needing one.

The Nikon Pro Staff series comes in a fixed 4 power and a real nice 2-7, should be in the $150.00 range and should last you a good long time. FS

If the rifle shoots well and you do a fair amount of target shooting you can even go up in size on the Mueller and get an 8X32. I've got on on my CZ455 and some dudes scoff at it and say its too much scope for the gun. My target scores shut them up pretty fast. Its not bad for rabbits and gophers out in open land but the fine dot reticle easily gets lost in cluttered backgrounds and the minimum 8 power is a bit much for closer in work.
