Hey all,

I was just about to hit the submit button for a order of a Stevens 200 7mm from SIR but I have some questions so here you go.

I am wondering if there is a differance from short action to long action and which one I should get. I was also wondering if a 7mm Rem Mag and a 7mm-08 are the same? The 7mm Rem Mag is a Long action and the 7mm-08 is a short mag. Any help with this would be great.

I already have a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 scope. What else should I order with the gun (other then bullets). I basically have noithing else except for a trigger lock. Would I need rings or anything else or do they come with the gun?

Any help here would be great as I do not know what I am doing fully.

nope a 7mm-08 and a 7mm mag are different.
the 7mm-08 is a .284 cal bullet seated in a .308 case
a 7mm mag is a .284 cal bullet seated in a .300 win mag case
you will need rings, don't ask me size or anything

but thats all I know, and I'm not even 100% sure im correct....howd I do?

Great thanks for a quick response. Now I do have a few more questions.

Which 7mm is better or are they both the same? Which are bullets cheaper for?

As for rings, are there such rings that don't scratch the scope when you put it on the scope? What are some decent budget rings to get?

Do I also need a "base" also? Or is that already on the gun?

Last question for now. Do I get a 7mm or a 30-06?

Thanks for your help

 :)

7-08 is a 308 case necked down to accept the 7mm bullets(.284 diameter)....what you are using the gun for will determine what would be the ideal calibre....I would like to have a 7-08 myself one day...good for deer and elk and what not, mild recoil and will not use as much powder as the 7mm mag(if that's even a factor with you) in the reloading process

The rifle I believe will need bases and rings....you may not want to order the ammo online as the shipping will probably be more than the ammo is worth

Also depends on what the stores around you stock for ammo as well, caliber wise that is...you don't want to get a caliber where the ammo is hard to find or is too expensive to buy...

The 7mm rem mag has way more factory rounds available, with higher velocities. For the Stevens 200 you’re going to need 2 #46 weaver base mounts. And you will need a pair of weaver 1" diameter scope rings, and medium height.

Holy cow grouseman is fast...LOL
I personally would opt for a 30.06...tons of ammo to be found anywhere and reasonably priced...darn thing will flatten most anything you put in it's way....you shpuld check EE forum,Rembo has a nice Savage in 30.06 for sale.basically identical to the Stevens 200's but this one has a detach mag...all you would do is mount your scope on it and get some ammo and you're off

IIRC this is your first gun. Stay away from the magnums. 30-06 is a good choice and ammo is very affordable. I'd also suggest considering a short action and go with .308 which is sometimes even slightly cheaper than the 30-06. These will do all you likely need without a pile of recoil and cheap to shoot.;)

Also I'm not sure if you know but I don't think you can use a 7mm rem mag in southern Ontario for small game hunting.

I have a Savage 111FCXP3 myself, which (as far as I can tell) is essentially identical to the Stevens 200 except for a few minor details like the color of the stock, as well as the fact that the Savage comes with a scope that's been pre-mounted and boresighted.

Long action usually refers to magnum rounds like 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win Mag. Short action usually refers to "standard" calibers like .223 .243, .270 (and 7mm-08).

7mm-08 (as I recently learned myself) is shorter than 7mm Rem Mag, they're two completely different rounds. Check out this thread for more info; Rifle for daughter (use the "find" function in your browser to look for 7mm-08)

Yes, you will need to order scope rings, the rifle doesn't come with them. I can't remember if the reciever on the Stevens has an integral rail or if it's drilled & tapped, but you'll still need rings regardless. I'd also invest in a boresight kit, it's a one-time purchase that you're almost guaranteed to use over and over again :D

When I ordered my Savage from SIR I also ordered a Dosko Sport single-rifle gun case, for transporting the rifle safely. They're only $25 apiece, but they're handy as hell, especially if you want to fly somewhere w/your rifle. Hope that helps!

Edit; Dammit you guys are fast!! Either that or I need to pick up the latest copy of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing :p

The 7mm rem mag runs about 300 fps faster than the 7mm-08 and recoils considerably more. I would guess since you are in Ontario, the 7mm-08 would be your better choice since it is a great deer caliber.

A cable lock, target and ear plugs will come with the rifle.

May I suggest you order 2 bases, Weaver #46M. M is for matte.
Also to also order a set of Burris Signiture rings #420521 which for matte and if you want blued rings for a gloss scope, get the 420520.

You might want to order a sling to go with it, swivels are NOT included so don't forget them.
Also, you might want to order a rifle case of some type for a scoped rifle.

Cheers

I will not be reloading, I will buying ammo from a store or "factory ammo" as I guess you guys call it. I am not sure if more powder burning is bad or good if you buy your own bullets.

Great, Thanks for telling me that as I probably would have gone crazy trying to figure that out. Now is weaver a style of rings and bases or is it a company?

I have already talked to him and turned down his offer as I had a local opportunity but that went through as he wanted too much money. I have looked around a for a 7mm mag, it's about $5.00 more a box of ammo which isn't too bad.

When I first go into guns I wanted a 30-06, then reading alot of posts here, people said the 7mm mag was faster and better except it was more expensive for bullets. I talked to my PAL teacher and he said a 7mm mag would be good for a guy my size because I would be able to handl the kick no problem.

Man, it's so hard to decide since I haven't shot any of these calibers. I would like to get more gun then I need and to me a 7mm mag would be that.

Thanks all for your great reponses

Your best bet is to find some buddies or whomever and go out shooting and try everything out that you possibly can...7mm, 270,300 mag or whatever...

I would be using this for deer and moose but close to Sudbury which is like 5 hours north of Toronto. I plan on buying a 10/22 later

Most of the people I know keep their guns at their camps. I only know 1 gun who brings them back and he has a 303 British or something.

Man, I thought I had decided on a 7mm mag. :( I dunno what to do. I am sure all these guns are close in terms of speed and potential to kill game but I just want to make sure I choose wisely. I don't wanna get a 7mm mag and then dislocate my sholder from shooting it but lower recoil would be nice.

:(

What 2 do?

Thanks all for your super quick replies

Just another thing for you to go crazy over.. Ask SIR what their FINAL price is for the gun, shipped. They are notorious for adding in additional things like locks etc on handgun sales(for safety reasons, but it does get pricey!) but I dont know about rifles...You may also want to check with Wholesale Sports as they had the same deal as SIR with additional calibers to choose from. Just had to jump in..
Cheers:)

Hey there,

I already contacted both of them and SIR is $323.99 + 7% tax + $12.95 Shipping + $7.50.

Wholsale is $319.99 + 7% tax + $35.00 shipping

So I am going with SIR on this.

Man, I thought I had decided on a 7mm mag.

Then get a freakin 7mm mag :p

There's not a lot of difference between the -06 and the 7mag, trust me. Recoil, trajectory power blah blah blah as a new shooter you won't notice the diff. If you're OK with the extra expense in ammo rock on....

I was looking around and 7-08 ammo is like rare at the stores close to me so I think I am going to get a 30-06. I think it's good because it's not a mag and bullets are atleast $5.00 cheaper a box.

Oh yeah, I already have a boresighter :)

So I am going to buy it now with some bases and rings :)
