So I am gathering parts to build my first true custom gun.
So far build looks as follows
Pierce action right bolt left port single shot.
Krieger pipe, 1-11 twist finish around 26 inches
Stock undecided as of now but probably a manners or A5
Caliber will be 308 win
Now I want to run 178 grain amax or possibly those new berger 175 otm bullets
I am thinking I probably dont want to run the standard sammi reamer does anybody have any suggestions?

Sounds like your going for a benchrest type, or f-class. Maybe a .308 obermeyer. Its a tighter tolerance 308 win. Also play around the throat a bit.

I'd suggest necking the suck out of that 308, but that's probably not the answer you're looking for.
How much brass prep do you want to do?
Tight chamber, and a little neck turning, and you're probably there.

Hey Rob - M852 IMO is the way to go as its set up for the 168 gr SMK(M852) which also has the same dimensions as the M118LR(175 SMK) so you should be good to go with the Bergers and Hornady tips.
I've used that chamber in my own rifle with good success with 175 SMK, 190 SMK and 178 Amax.

Bottom metal and trigger?

I'd also neck the suck out of it to at least .284, but maybe even .264. Although .308 ain't a terrible choice :D

Sounds like it'll be a heck of a sweet rig!

Left hand load right hand bolt good thing you are Scottish. Whatever the tightest chamber you can get to be able to still run factory ammo

Just a thought, but settle on a bullet, like the 178 A-Max, as well as a COAL, and give Manson or Kiff a call. Explain to them what you are looking for, as in tight chamber and no turn neck, and they will do the rest.

That Mexican rilfe should shoot like a hot tamale.

talk to the gunsmith you'll use. I'm sure they will have a tight match chamber for 308, and going to the expense of ordering one will be unuecessary. Obermeyer chambers are optimized for palma bullets (155's) SOme gunsmiths will even use a separate throater depending on what bullets you will use and whether they will be mag fed etc. Best talk to the guy doing the work to see what he has/needs.

The OP is the smith.

Im no smith but I will be building the rifle, My first. It is a single shot so no mag length to be concerned with. Hey Rich what is your coal with a 178 amax?
I was planning on ordering a piloted reamer from ptg, is there any benefit ordering from ptg's canadian distributor?

I beleive Gary shipping is cheaper then ordering from PTG directly and you are supporting a Canadian company that deals with gun parts which are few and far between.

pick up the phone after the SHOT show is over and speak directly with Dave Kiff at PT&G. If you want to throat for a 178 Amax (great bullet by the way) I guarantee he will come up with a print for that very bullet. I am willing to bet he will tell you the 308 Bisley Palma reamer is what you want

I would think there is a better bullet choice than the 178 Hornady in a match rifle. No one I see shooting F class or Benchrest use Hornady bullets
I know quite a few using Hornady for hunting

I want to run hornady so I don't have to trim and point bullets any box of hpbt bullets I have ever measured seem to be all different lengths the hornadys seem to measure the same. Now I just ordered a Sinclair bullet comparitor kit so it will be interesting to measure at the ogive and see who's bullets are more consistent length. I don't consider this a match rifle it's going to be a long range plinker for all intense purposes. I went the single shot route as I am not a big fan of DBMS and always shoot my bdl's single shot anyways. The hornady bullets are also about 20 bucks cheaper than bergers

I've shot thousands of the 178 Amax bullets and they are easy to make work and, as you say, cheaper than most. The throat for these will not be substantially different than any other bullet in the 175-185 grain range so you will have a pretty versatile platform when you are done. Nice to see someone diving in and chambering their own gun.
