I am looking for suggestions for a scope on a muzzle loader. I am thinking something like a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10X50. I would like to spend up to $700.00. I hunt mainly deer in the open prairies here in Sask. Let me know what you think.

I would think a low power variable or low fixed would be fine for shots to 150yds. If you like more power by all meens get more power.

Iwould also suggest a lower power 1.5x5 Leupold. Also Burris makes a hell of a scope as well just to throw it out there for a bit less $$ There not as proven as the VXs,however, Stood up to one hell of a beating on a 2 week elk hunt.

I would suggest a Bushnell Trophy or Legend in a 3-9x40. Muzzleloaders dont have a lot of recoil so the need for a top end scope is not needed. I have been using a cheap Banner Dusk till Dawn and have never had any problems with it. This past summer alone I put approx 300-350 rnds through it and never had a problem. I was using 150 grns T-7 and SST's. My 2cents

I would dissagree with the assumption that M/L's do not have a lot of recoil.... they can be brutal with magnum loads. Although the Bushnell Dusk till Dawn are extremely inexpensive and have fair eye relief they do not compare with the Lueps or the Burris.
Leupold is worth the extra money for sure and if you want excellent quality (low light) I would definitely buy the VX-III or a VXII. I use a 4-12 VXII Leup on my T/C.
The Fullfield II's are an excellent choice as well and have the longest eye relief of the three. I also found the ballistic plex reticles very functional for shooting long range with the M/L's.

Correction to BigRedd's post....you shoot a TC Encore with a Leupold Vari-X IIc 4-12x40 A/O fine duplex...how do I know this......He caught me on a off day and convinced me to sell it to him for $300 bucks...temporary insanity is my defense! Burris FFII's in 3x9x40 only carry 3.5"s of eye releif and don't compair to the Leupolds 4" +. The major consideration for my scope selection for the muzzle loader is weight and eye releif.....the simple answer is a Leupold VXII 2-7x33!!!! Delivers on all fronts and keeps the profile low. I lengthened my arms even more last year dragging my CVA Optima Pro 45 Cal with a Burris Signature 3-9x40 on a day long hike....I've since sold the Burris and purchased a slightly used Leupold Vari-XIIc 2-7x33 to mount on my new TC Omega thumbhole.

My 2 buddies and I all hunt during muzzleloader season me for 5 yrs and both of them each for 10+ years. They both gave Omega using 150 grns T-7 and both have under $150 scopes and they have never needed more. They have never shifted, fogged, or impeded them in any way , shape or form and they are always successful in bagging ther game including 2 antelopes last year at 125 yrds and 180 yrds. U can spend more on a top quality $700 scope but it's not needed, hell if want to spend some money buy the Bushnell 3200 ( $245) if u want to part with ur cash. U wont need any more here on the prairies in Oct. Thats all I have to say about that;)
