I've found 3 shotguns, all within a similar price range. Knowing very little about shotguns is not making a purchase an easy decision, so I thought I would poll the group!

Wingmaster 870

Winchester Model 12

Mossberg 500

All of which look to be beautiful guns, that I would love to bring in as a second gun into my collection!
Intended use is bird hunting/skeet shooting. Though I feel I'll need to do alot of skeet shooting to get started.

What do you guys think?!?

Thanks!

Andrew

Went through the same thing last year. Wound up getting a Benelli Nova for a very good price. I just liked the look of it, and it has worked out well. Doesn't help you much I know, but what I do know is that it's hard to go wrong with either the Mossberg or the Remington. Don't know much about the Winny.

What is a Winny? Is that a Hourse noise?

are the older guns made of a different metal? (the barrel)

I have a 30/06 that heats up really quickly, after a few shots, and yet my buddy can fire his 270 quite a few more times than me before it gets warm. Mines brand new and his is 45 years old.

Is there any fact behind this??

I love my 870. It's a great leadslinger. versatile too. i've shot trap, skeet, 5 stand, sporting clays and 3gun matches with it and never had an issue.

870's Suck.. An entry level Shotgun. That used to be well made. Get over it there are better guns out there.

Yes it is an entry level gun. unless i'm mistaken the OP was looking for an entry level gun. i'm not starting a pissing match i'm just sayin.

The Model 12 has a pretty long barrel for skeet. Full choke doesn't help but if it was a shorter barrel you could have it opened up. It's also a heavy gun for upland hunting, although it could still be made into a duck gun that could shoot steel.

Similar comments for the 30" Full choke Mossberg.

The 870 has a barrel better suited to skeet (28" Mod).

I'd keep looking. What kind of bird hunting will you do - upland, ducks, geese, turkey, or all?

I would suggest a nice ithaca featherlight model 37 they pop on EE & some in GREAT condition for 200-250 and I personally think thats a steal! Bottom ejecet, great for left or right handed shooters. That being said I also do see some VERY ugly model 37's pop up aswell. Also new/novice shooters I have noticed get confused with the bottom eject and some how manage to jam it up damn well! I went through with one friend showed him how to use it etc, he some how he has one cartdige seated in the chamber and another one behind it, ramming it. HOW does that happen lol? he did it twice in one 1 hr, I have never seen any one do that besdies him lol.

Thanks for all your replies folks!

It sounds like the wingmaster 870 is in the right category, but people seem to have lost faith in it as a decent gun?

As far as what I'd like to hunt with it, anything smaller than a deer, that wont sit still long enough for me to hit it with a 30.06.
