HELLO FELLOW NUTZ! ima going nuts looking for a bolt action ,accurate, weather resistant 308 for hunting and shooting paper long range,id like a remington sps tact ,but i have read that the finish is crappy and the gun rusts easilly,,i think i might get the remmy r5 milspec in stainless and deal with the extra pound of weight to carry it hunting..IS THE RUGER M77 acurate enough? i looked at savage but read(internet of course) that they are kinda "cheap" feeling.HEEELLLLPPPP!!!!.going NUTZ!!! (i presently hunt with my cz 858 762/39 which i love,,just missing a very acurate rifle for my collecton , THANKS

5R Milspec would be awesome. The weight is not terribly bad and the out of the box accuracy is way above average for a factory production rifle in that price range. It is the one rifle purchase I have yet to have any sort is regret buying.

Hunting with a Rem 5r?

Honestly I think you need to really take a look at what you want to do with the gun.

A target rifle, and a hunting rifle are 2 different things for a reason! Lugging around a 10 pound rig is not fun and you will feel it after a long day hunting. At the same time long hot days at the range are gonna affect a light barrelled hunting rig more.

First problem is your stainless requirement. It is useless in a target gun if you ask me, and is just gonna add to your budget. I can understand for a hunting rifle, but again you are not gonna be happy with a hunting rifle for long range sessions.

Second issue is optics. The optics you are gonna want on a longer range target rifle are not gonna be the same as you want in a hunting rifle. A giant heavy gun coupled with a giant heavy scope is not gonna be fun to hunt with!

Third issue is that you are gonna find that you will eventually have both so lets focus on that option. ;)

If you can increase your budget just slightly you could have 2 guns that will make you much happier.

Hunting:
- Savage Axis Stainless = $400
- Marlin XS7 = $400 (no stainless though)
** both of these are very accurate and reliable hunting rifles, you wont need to worry about smashing up, or lugging around.

Target:
- Savage BVSS = $750
- Remington SPS Tactical = $700
** For the money its hard to beat what savage is ofering in this category of rifle, and the BVSS is probably the best buy in a strictly target shooting rifle out there, but there are others out there as well.

Another Option:
If you are absolutely set on just getting one rifle I would look at a Savage 10 Precision Carbine, as it still has a heavier barrel but is shorter, and a pound and a half lighter than the 5R. Doesn't come in stainless though, but would be a perfect all around gun IMHO.

got it down to the Savage model 10,very ###y digital camo,AccuTrigger™, AccuStock™, matte blued barrel action, heavy free-floating button-rifled barrel, detachable box magazine swivel stud for bipod, oversized bolt handle....only 7 lbs(light for huntin), 829$ from Frontier! its not stainless though.. hope it wont rust in he rain... ITS ON!!!!!! (i think.)

My father hunted foul and hare with a blued 12ga for 40 years in all kinds of weather and there isn't a hint of rust on that gun.

It was passed down to me 10 years ago and still doesn't have a hint of rust on it.
I agree with what others have said, weight is a factor in a hunting rifle.

I have hunted with mostly non stainless rifles my whole hunting career, none of them are rusty, routine maintenance and a quick wipe down after a day of rain and you will never have a problem, take care of your firearms, they won't rust from a day in the rain. Stainless is pretty though, if you want it get it.

If you want a solid, weather resistant hunting rifle look very closely at a Tikka T3

Have to agree with Tomochan, the Tikka are a nice gun. I've been hunting with a T3 Tactical for about 3 years. I bought it because I also wanted to do some target shooting with my son.

I have had a T3 Lite for 4 years now and have hunted with it every year. I can't say enough good things about them. Just pick one up and open and close the bolt ... I bet you'll be sold. Very accurate too, and the best part for hunting, they are very light.

i hunt with a remington 700 sps varmint and i dont know if its the same finish as a tactical or not but i find it holds up well in the weather, just make sure you dry it really good and wipe it down with an oily rag after every hunt and it would be ok. i always make sure i dry my firearms out really well and keep them oiled and never had a problem with rust. even duck hunting in salt water. Even if it wasent raining and my rifle went from the warm house to outdoors or outdoors to warm house i make sure it gets dryed out. That savage will be a nice gun. Happy Hunting!!
