Can anyone help me to identify this British revolver ?

It is in .450 caliber, tip-up of Spirlet type action, as British proof marks and Bear the retailer's information on the top bridge and barrel wich is : J Lang & sons, 22 Cockspur St. London. The craftmanship is excellent. and its dating from about 1868-69 from what I have been told.

That would be Joseph Lang, he who built very fine shotguns. The history of the firm is long and interesting, beginning around 1823. In 1852 the firm moved to 22 Cockspur Street, Charing Cross (Pall Mall). Around this time the firm was appointed gunmaker to His Majesty the King of Holland. It was also the time when the eldest son, Joseph II, joined the firm; he had been apprenticed to James Purdey in 1845. The firm moved to #10 Pall Mall in 1890. It survives today as Atkin, Grant and Lang (who may have the original order papers for the gun). You have an extraordinary revolver from a famous maker, and in fine condition too. Thank you for sharing the photos.

Not to throw cold water on the info, but Lang MAY have only been the retailer. Offering the revolver as an added service to the customers, using their name as a guarentee of the quality. It could also be Belgian, and if sold in the U.K. would necesarily have to pass proof. that's not to say that they didn't make it in addition to shotguns.

Wilkinson sold revolvers marked with their trade name even though that was not what they produced.

Hi John, that was my first taught too. Now I am puzzled over the origin of this beauty. Something sure, if it is Belgian made, it is of high quality. In the Encyclopedia of pistol & revolver from Major Frederick Myatt, there is one exactly the same at page 99 ,but in .38 caliber. Unfortunately No information as for the manufacturer, the book says it is of British origins.
