hello
if you guys so kind enough to help me to findout what i can take to USA and i cant. i am working on ATF 6 paper work.
the ATF told me no m4 style carbine because a folding stock and other things
and i am almost thinking about just going in with a M1 carbine.
what should i do? the course is on oct so i got time. i might buy a new carbine.
ps a canadian made sidearm is ok right ?

thank you so much

I'm in the same situation and I decided to take a course where I can rent firearms....anyway, as you can't fly with ammo it doesn't add too much and is trouble free.
Sorry no answer to your questions

Well depending on who is giving the course you may/need apply for a
Technical Assistance Agreement
Most HSLD courses are for US citizens only. If you're not, then you need a TAA, depending on the organization and course.
Once again this is just my experience you need to talk to the course provider. Just my $0.02
Good Luck

You have time, but...

If you are not American, you don't have all that much time.

Unless you are an American, after you've gotten your Form 6NIA, the school (that you propose to attend) may then have to get approval (to train you in that particular course) from the U.S. State Department. (The Sig-Sauer Academy charges $250. per - and says that it may take 60 days.) Check now with the school(s) that you would attend.

The Form 6NIA application has some out-dated stipulations. With the sunset of the so-called 'assault weapons ban', the folding stock and other things no longer pose any problem on the temporary importation of a semi-automatic rifle (like a so-called 'M4'). Full auto M4, a problem. Short - less than 16" - barreled rifle, a problem. Chinese, North Korean, Iranian or whatever rifle, a problem. Semi-automatic-only AR-variant carbine with a barrel 16" (or longer), no problem.

Buy your hunting license and apply for your Form 6NIA now.

how can we carry in the states?

Er, whoever told you that at ATF is wrong, I've got an approved Form 6NIA for an AR-15 carbine and I've renewed it twice. Unless it's got a barrel less than 16 inches it should be approved, the "sporting purpose" test doesn't apply to temporary imports.

You need a hunting licence to be able to legally possess firearms in the US as an NIA, but you need one of those to get a Form 6NIA anyway.

As an NIA you can buy ammo in the US, provided you have the hunting licence (but you can't export it, you have to use it there).

Could the issue here be with barrel length? My understanding is that an AR with a barrel less than 16" is a no go for temporary import.

I shouldn't say anything because I'm so totally peed off by it, but the reason ATF won't let the Swiss Arms guns in is because they say they have MG receivers and are NFA weapons, doesn't matter what the barrel length is, they won't let them in on a Form 6NIA even though you can get them for AR-15s etc. Of course if the barrel is less than 16 inches, you're SOL anyway, but I'm basically at the point of hiring a lawyer because the dufus at the ATF Tech Branch is incapable of figuring out that they were made as semi-autos and don't contain full-auto parts.

"...US training course..." The facility accept your application and confirm your attendence? There are some weird U.S. government rules about non-citizens attending shooting courses.
"...a Canadian made sidearm..." That'd be a Para-Ordnance, a North American Arms .45or an Inglis BHP. You'll be fine with any legally owned handgun as long as it isn't Chinese made.
"...with an M1 carbine..." Not if it's a Lend/Lease milsurp carbine. More daft U.S. rules. Mind you, my Plainfield carbine would be my first choice.
"...Yes they can..." Not without the proper U.S. permits. Read exemption 1.
"...at the point of hiring a lawyer because..." You're thinking of paying a U.S. lawyer to tangle with a U.S. government agency that is allowed to make law by regulation? Go lie down until that thought goes away. Only the lawyer will win.

While Canadian law requires only that the receiver was initially manufactured and assembled into a semi-auto weapon, the NFA requires that it be unable to accept full-auto components. This is because components of NFA items are also NFA items, so any receiver that can accept a full-auto trigger group is a machine gun receiver, regardless of what components (if any) it contains in it's assembled form. This is why we can have "real" G36s as long as they manufactured as semi-autos whereas these would be NFA items in the US. This is also the reason why HK416 lowers are NFA controlled items regardless of the guts you put it them. How this applies to the Swiss Arms rifles I don't know, as I am not familiar with their technical workings at all.

thank you so much for good info. i am so sorry being late but i been running around. i am going back to army( reserve) maybe too old? anyhow, as long as ar-15 with barrel lenght under 16 ins will be fine and dlask arm 1911 is ok. right? i might buy ar-15 for this .maybe bushmaster lower with MGS m4 carbine upper. for m1 carbine, i think it is a win upper with an after market barrel with GI parts. should i take m1 carbine and save time ?, because i can get paperwork start next week with m1 carbine.
thank you so much for help(oh !the course is only three days carbine and handgun course, nothing big)

I was unaware that there was "permission checks" by the ATF/ FBI whatever

for canadian's who wish to attend schools such as

LMS and Tacticle Response (US courses for fun reasons, 30rnd mags, maybe supressors and FA)

or ESI
