HELP!!!! My son-in-law just received his father's old hunting rifle. It is in 307 cal. I have heard that 308 dies will work for re-sizing although I will need a new shell holder. Does anyone know of a supplier of brass and/ or loaded ammo?
How about the new soft tip bullets from Hornady...anyone tried them and are they available?

I assume (yeah, I know i shouldn't) that I will have to use loads on the lower end of the scale, but is it safe to start with reduced 308 loads? My manual doesn't list the 307.

Any and all help gratefully accepted:confused:

The Wholesale Sports catalog (Pg 160) has a listing for 307 Win brass. They also list a huge assortment of bullets as well although no listing that I can see for loaded ammo. The Modern Reloading Manual (second edition) by Richard Lee has load data for a 307 Winchester. I have just purchased this book & find that it has all the info I will ever need.

for a shell holder use the one from a 30 30. 307 is a 30 30 rim on a 308 case but with thicker walls. you can use 308 starting load data to start as they are loaded to the same pressures but max loads in manuel will not be safe. i find using rel 15 or varget you can work up to a max load witch is usually about 2 or 3 grains below 308 max. i have done this with several powders as most of the 307 data supplied is old and some of the newer powder are better than what is listed. . new brass from dealers isn't always avalable but i have picked up quite a bit on the ee's. as for bullets i find the 170 speer fp to be about the best i have tried. hornady isn't selling leverlution bullets yet. maybe soon.

SAAMI specs the .307 to a maximum chamber pressure of 52,000 cup or roughly 58,000-60,000 psi. The .308 has a maximum SAAMI pressure of 62,000 psi.

BTW, there is no direct comparison between cup and psi but SAAMI does quote a calculation that provides for close approximations in rifle cartridges.

Thanx to all for the quick response. Now I have to call my buddy who is heading for Winterpeg tomorrow and get him to check on brass for me. I have the shellholder and dies and a supply of Varget (best I've found for both my 22 250 and 7mm 08). Guess I'll be busy this weekend giving him his first lesson on roll-yer-own ammo.:dancingbanana:

if your using varget try working up to 45 grns with a 150 and 44 grns with a 170. both these are good in my 307 win.
