Hello,

I am hoping that someone can assist me. I have the basic model Henry lever action and I have two problems. One is that for some reason rounds get caught on the little feed ramp on the carrier and it shaves the bottom of the lead ball as it goes into battery. How can I get it to feed properly. I can only assume the little lead shavings drop into the depths of the carrier or the receiver.

The other problem is the bolt is grating against the top of the hammer when you're working the action. The motion to eject is smooth. But when you work the lever back to load a round it's really gritty. I can see on the tip of the hammer where the bottom surface of the bolt is polishing the hammer.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

How many rounds has it seen since you cleaned the gun?

The hammer grating on the underside of the bolt is simply due to fouling and crud. Strip down the receiver and clean it out. When it goes back together wipe a thin smear of grease on the cocking and rubbing track on the underside of the bolt where it rubs on the heel of the hammer.

Similarly if the fresh round carrier is gummed up with gunk and crud it may be making the bullet drag so it's being forced askew as it's chambered so it drags harder than it should on the edge of the chamber mouth. Dragging on the lower edge of the chamber mouth would support the idea that the new cartridge is getting stuck and the bolt has to work harder to chamber it. And since the bolt generally only catches on the upper rim to push the round into place it's little wonder that it's forcing the sticky bullet down and shaving some lead off the bullet nose.

It's only been like 50 rounds or so since I last dismantled it and cleaned it. Although the other night there was a tiny piece of lead caught between the top of the bolt and the receiver which definitely was making an impact. I was usually using Remington dry lube which was silicone based. I'll try some grease next time. The carrier is clean, or was clean on inspection, maybe its the round as well as i think i was using mostly lead nosed and not plated but its happening to plated noses as well. Thanks.
